LCD loose connection - flickers on/off when changing lid position

Hello and thanks to all contributors for this very nice forum!

I have this problem with my older MBP (Model 1211):

My display has started flickering whenever I change the position of the lid. By flickering I mean picture's "falling out", as if there was a loose connection. No color related problems or lines across the screen. Just this flickering problem that is becoming more and more pronounced, so to speak. At the beginning the problem cropped up only when drawing the lid towards the keyboard from an angle about 90 degrees. Now the problem is showing when I push the lid forward from the same 90 degrees position.

What is your opinion? Is it a display cable gone bad?

Oh, and I have checked both the inverter and display cable connections to the logic board, and see no problems here. But thats the only internal thing I've checked. There's no problem using an external display.

What do you suggest I do next?

In advance - thanks you.

Edit: Here's a little movie clip showing the problem in action: http://kortlink.dk/as7w

Korf, did you ever get this fixed? Thanks.

@ineffable27: Yes I did. Bought a cable off ebay which solved the problem. The procedure was a little bit too thrilling for my liking, but absolutely manageable. Are you having same problems?

door

Yes I have the same model, with the same issue. Which exact part is needed, by the way? Inverter cable or inverter board? And how difficult is the repair process? iFixit doesn't seem to have the tutorial for this process.

Looks Like a bad inverter cable probably pinched in the hinge. The MBP 1211 is not a LED display model so it has a specific inverter cable unlike the LED model who share the lightning and video functions in the same LVDS cable. Don't wait too long to replace the cable cause it could short in the hinge and damage your logic board.

You too believe it is the inverter cable? If it is I will get at new one as soon as they have one in stock at ifixet.

Can I ask you how positive you are that my issue is related to the inverter cable? I am asking because the price rises when sent to Denmark (shipment + tax). And thank you for your answers!

Loosing screen lightning when moving the display up and down is, most of the times, caused by a faulty inverter cable. It's the friction and pressure inside the hinge where the cable goes through that damage the tiny cable. Don't ask me to be 100% positive about your issue since I don't have your machine front of me to troubleshoot it but from experience I'm pretty sure that the cable is the problem.

Move the lid up and down. If the screen goes dark but you can still see the desktop dimly, then it's an inverter issue. If it goes completely dark then look to the Display data cable. After you let us know which one it does, please let us know and give us the last three figures of your serial number for the correct part and guide to replacing it.

Thank you.

Moving the lid up and down gives the effect of a plasma screen with dimly burn-in marks. I hadn't really noticed this until you draw my attention to it.

So this means an inverter issue?

The last three digits in the serial number for the MBP is W0K. Not quite sure if that's what you meant.

I changed your Book selection to the correct one. Here's how to change the cable: MacBook Pro 15" Core 2 Duo Model A1211 Inverter/Camera Cable Replacement

So you think it's the inverter cable - and not the actual inverter?

On one hand this would be quite good, it's a pretty much cheaper repair, on the other hand it's bad since the cable is out of stock.

What do you mean by changing my book selection?

I am having the same problem with a Mac Air 13. The Serial number is C02K7FDDDRVC. When I change the position of the screen, it has a blue flicker with lines,

@ineffable27: As I told you the procedure was a bit technical demanding, but nevertheless do-able for some one like me who haven't got any particular skills. The tutorial is right here:
