Why won't my MacBook air start up?

I bought a used 2013 MacBook Air 11" with no SSD. I installed my old ssd and booted up to recovery mode, then started a fresh install of the OS.

Part way through the install, the computer went dead. No response to the power button or much of anything else -- no lights on the magsafe2 charger. (good charger; works with my other macbook air)

Any idea why it became unresponsive/how to fix?

What is the color of the MagSafe chargers LED? Amber or Green.

If I unplug the charger from the MBA I'm typing on, and plug it in to the dead one sitting next to it on my desk, the light is green.

That seemed odd, so I got out a second magsafe 2 charger, and plugged it in to the dead laptop. No light on the magsafe charger.

Then, just to be sure, I tested that charger on my good laptop, and it's working fine.

@mcclintic - I would start off cleaning the MagSafe port of the system as dirt can build up within the orifice, likewise the pins of the cable can be problematic so the middle pin doesn’t connect cleanly.

If the fails I would replace the MacBook Air 11" (Mid 2013-Early 2015) I/O Board as that has the connector, here’s the guide to do it MacBook Air 11" Mid 2013 I/O Board Replacement.

The next issue is the charging comparator resistors within the charging logic which often get damaged by knockoff chargers which will require replacement of the these tiny parts on the logic board.

I cleaned the port on the computer -- it actually looked cleaner than the port on my functional machine, so I cleaned that one too, while I was at it.

No change...

Maybe the I/O board?

@mcclintic - I'm sure you've already tried this: have you reset the SMC?

Yes, I tried that as well. At this point, I think it may be a hardware problem... need to take a closer look at the boards & also try with the keyboard disconnected.

Might be a bad battery—you could try opening the device and disconnecting the battery, then with a known good charger connected and the battery still disconnected it should be able to power on. If it still can't power on, there might be an issue with the MagSafe board or the main logic board. Good luck!

I gave this a shot -- no luck though.

That makes me think there is an issue with either the MagSafe board or the main logic board. To determine which one you'll need to inspect those parts for signs of damage. Good luck!
