Cannot Burn CD's when I put in a new blank CD

I am unable to burn CD's on my pre-flat panel iMac. It's the Snow Edition iMac G3--30 gigs of hard drive, 400 MHz speed, Tiger 10.4.11. It runs great but when I put a new blank CD (-RW) to burn files, the CD is ejected and an error message appears that says something like the computer is unable to find the CD burning device.

I also have the first Flat Panel iMac (800 MGz speed, 80 gig hard drive, Tiger 10.4.11) and have to tried to "Share Files" by way of the Ethernet cable between to the 2 computers but I am unable to do this. I follow the "File Sharing" instructions in the Help section but when I "Go to Connect Server", no "computer" is accessible when I click on "Browse". Any answer to either to either query? Thank You!

hi

firstly you might want to create 2 separate questions here because you've got two different topics on two different machines - it may make it easier to more clearly track and categorize the question and answer for each. You can edit your original post and create a 2nd one with the other half of your double-question.

anyhow, I don't have an answer regarding your first question, but regarding your file sharing problem:

in order to directly connect those two Macs with an ethernet cable, you must use a special cable called an "Ethernet crossover cable", or be using an ethernet hub or switch in between the 2 machines.

If you are simply trying to connect them directly using a standard Ethernet cable like the one you'd use to connect to an Ethernet jack in the wall, it won't work. Newer Macs can be connected directly with an regular cable, but not certain older Macs, see this Apple support document.

On the first question have you ever been able to burn cd's with the 400 Mhz unit? If not run About this Mac and system profiler (disk burning) to confirm you have a drive capable of burning disk. If you do you should use a cleaning cd and see if that clears your problem. Ralph

good point. according to Mactracker, the 400MHz iMac G3 Snow edition machines had a 24x CDROM drive, not a CD-RW drive...
