won't boot from floppy, get error 41 when boot from HD

Here's a question for the "greybeards" out there:

I have a PowerBook 5300c, which when I attempt to boot it normally, gets an error 41 bomb when booted normally or with extensions off. I was running perfectly before I put it in storage a few months ago.

If I attempt to boot from a DiskTools2 floppy, it just spits the disk out and attempts to boot from the HD.

If I attempt to boot from a System 7.5.3 CD, using a SCSI external drive, I get a flashing ? icon, then it fails out to the internal HD.

The boot sequence appears to be correct; the bomb occurs right after the splash screen disappears, as the desktop is being drawn.

Thanks!

I resolved the issue by formatting the internal hard drive and starting over. As an aside, this model will boot from a third-party external SCSI CD-ROM drive at ID 6. I'm currently about to replace the PRAM battery in this unit, documenting the process for some new guides.

Just curious is the SCSI terminated? If I remember right this was the old key combo for a SCSI start up: CMD-OPT-SHIFT-DELETE-#

the # being the number of the scsi drive.

good luck

if there is only one SCSI Drive, would it be Drive 0 or Drive 1, I know that modern computers start with zero, but does it apply here?

The CD drive is terminated, and set to device 6. I will give this a try and report back :)

Is the 7.5.3 CD an original? This computer needs an enabler which may not be on the cd you have. I What Brand of CD-ROM do you have? I have experienced mixed results with these media.

I suggest setting the SCSI ID to 3. Good Luck.

If I remember right you have lost the HD in this system. For some reason the HD is not spinning and will give you the bomb. The system disk for these older computers was different for each one. I used to have them, but they went out, when I moved.

Im pretty sure that portable macs couldn't boot from SCSI(But i could be wrong, it's been a long time) you might have a hardware related issue such as a bad hard drive, if you can, try checking the drive for clicking noises, and that the SCSI Cables from the drive are ok, im not sure if the cd might be scratched, unreadable, or you may have the 68k version of system 7 designed to run on motorola 680*0 Cpus inolder macs, hope this helps.
