Why is Home button acting weird after dock connector water exposure?

The dock connector plug on my car charger got dunked in a water/soda mix and I didn't notice it when I went to plug it into my phone to charge. I heard my phone stop charging after a short bit and upon inspecting the dock connector, I found water by the dock connector plug. I quickly attempted to dry out both the dock connector and cable that plugs into it.

My home button started acting weird like it was stuck down. Sometimes voice control would activate randomly but I could never get the button to respond to a press. Is it possible the water that got in and on the dock connector from the charging cable messed with the home button? Is it possible there's a short from the sticky soda on the dock connector pins causing the home button to act like it's randomly stuck down?

I disassembled my iPhone to attempt drying out the Home button, but it looks like that wasn't possible. My home button starting working fine for a short bit after reassembly, but then went back to the erratic Voice Control behavior and then stopped responding to presses again. Does this help diagnose the problem any?

Hi Charles,

In my opinion, it sounds like the water may have corroded the home button connector inside the phone, due to that connector being attached to the main of the board, via a connector upon the dock, this seems to most likely be your problem. After cleaning the home button connector using the iPhone 4 home button replacement guide, you may find the problem resolved. If ,however, that still doesn't solve your problem, you should either replace the home button flex, or go the whole hog and replace the dock connector.

Attempted cleaning the home button flex to no avail. Replacing it worked like a charm. Thank you!

Charles Smith, start cleaning your iPhone. Use this guide for direction on how to clean it. It was written for a 3G but all the information pertains to your phone as well. Use this guides to work on your model. After a good cleaning, you should reevaluate and see what works and what does not. I would plan on replacing the dock connector which is available right here. Hope this helps to get you started, good luck.
