Internal Hard drive and firewire connected drive failure

According to the research here on the iFixit site it appears that this failure (cannot see internal drive, was able to boot and run from an external firewire drive, now that has failed) The suggestions, on this site, have been - the hard disk controller or the logic board.

Is the HDD controller integrated with the logic board or is it a separate board? If so, is it available?
