Corrosion coming from flow meter’s union connector

Hello, my GE refrigerator won’t dispense water, although the ice machine still works fine. When I took the back of the fridge apart, I see a bunch of corrosion coming from this part. Any ideas what I need to fix this problem?

Hi @nicholasrudolf,

What is the model number of the refrigerator?

Does anyone know the part number to that wire piece connector on top of the flow meter? I had this same issue and that part above is corroded too. One of the wires wasn't connected.

Does anyone know what the connection part number is to the flow meter? No only was my flow meter corroded but the connection was too and needs to be replaced.

Hi @mommaa,

What is the full model number of the refrigerator?

Hi @nicholasrudolf

The flowmeter (GE part #WR30X30720) is used to measure the amount of water being supplied to the ice maker and also the water dispenser.

Have you checked or replaced the water filter lately?

It seems that water has managed to seep out of the connection. Check what the condition of the flowmeter and the tubing connection is like by cleaning off the corrosion. If you can get it clean check if there's any water escaping from the connection when either the dispenser is being used or the ice maker is filling with water.

Thank you for the response. I changed the water filter about a month before this issue started occurring. I tried a new filter after a few days of the water only dispensing for a few seconds but the new filter didn’t seem to change anything. I’ll try cleaning it out and replacing the flow meter and union connector to see if that does the trick. The flow meter replacement part will be here next week so I’ll keep you posted.

@nicholasrudolf

Did you happen to check the condition of the old water filter when you removed it?

Just wondering if it may be prudent to flush the tubes out by bypassing the new filter in case something from the old filter is still in the system preventing a good flow or even causing the flowmeter to register incorrectly.

Try removing it and flushing it out also.

Most flowmeters have a magnet tied to the impeller which is spinning round due to the water flowing through and when it passes a magnetic reed switch, the switch operates.

If you have an Ohmmeter by connecting it to the flowmeter wiring terminals you can check if the flowmeter is sending"pulses" by blowing air through it

Just a thought

I didn’t think to check the filter and it’s long gone in the trash. How do you bypass the filter and flush the tubes out?

door

@nicholasrudolf

Don't know with your model but with some makes when you remove the filter it auto bypasses the water from the filter housing so that it goes directly to the dispenser/icemaker although it seems that with GE you need a bypass plug

Ok thank you. I just ordered a bypass plug, should be here in a couple days. Thanks for the suggestion.

Hello Nicholas

If you are experiencing corrosion on the union connector of your refrigerator's flow meter, it is likely that there is a leak somewhere in the system. The corrosion is most likely a result of moisture getting into the area around the Union connector.

To fix this issue, you will need to first locate the source of the leak. This may involve disassembling the flow meter and inspecting the various connections and fittings. Once you have located the leak, you will need to replace the damaged component.

It is important to address this issue as soon as possible, as a leaking refrigerant system can be dangerous and can cause damage to the environment. Additionally, a leaking refrigerant system can cause the refrigerator to run less efficiently, resulting in higher energy bills and potentially shortened lifespan of the appliance.

If you are not comfortable working on refrigeration systems, it is recommended that you contact a professional technician who has the necessary knowledge and experience to diagnose and repair the issue.

Thank you for the response. Do you think the leak would be a water leak? Or some other kind of leak?

Hi @mommaa,

It seems that the electrical connector is part of the flowmeter (part #WR30X30720) so you may have to change that unless you can clean up the connection by removing the corrosion as best you can -scraping it off and then cleaning with Isopropy Alcohol 99%+etc. Hopefully there's some metal left to conduct the electricity.

If the union connector for the water supply is also corroded then unfortunately the union connector is not listed in the parts list for your model, only the flowmeter and the tube that connects to it - see Machine Compartment Items # 950 & 876 lower left corner of diagram.

You may have to measure the outside diameter of the tube as best you can and then go to a plumbing supplies or hardware store and ask for a suitably sized straight water tube union connector (examples only)

  • Thank you but I’m looking for the electrical component that connects/clips to the top of the flow meter with the wires. I have the tube union connectors.

Hi @mommaa,

If the flowmeter side of the connector is OK check places such as mouser.com or digikey .com for plug connectors that match what is there. i.e. number of pins, dimensions of pins spacing etc.

Then if you find one you will have to spice it in place of the original

At least you have pictures showing which wire goes where.

@jayeff thank you. I’ll check it out.
