Display contains horizontal multicolor lines

Hi,

I have a 5/6 year old MacBook.

I've had the problems below for about 1 year, but they've steadily been getting worse to the point where I really need to do something about it!

Here's the problem:

The bottom half of the screen appears to be inverted (as if someone has applied reverse video!) and there is a small (1/2 an inch) horizontal line half way in the reverse video zone with multiple multicolored vertical lines inside it. Inside the small horizontal line, it's a dead zone as the display is shunted down by that amount.

If I move the screen around, or apply pressure in random places on my MacBook, sometimes I can get the reverse video to fix itself (so I'm just left with the horizontal line).

I'm certain it's not my graphics chip as when I connect an external screen, everything looks fine

Any ideas?

Does anyone think it's a cable issue or my screen itself?

Is it worth just taking a look inside to see if anything is loose?

Any help would be much appreciated!

Nick.

Please give us the last three figures of your serial number.

Hi- the last three figures of my serial number are WBV.

My Mac is A1181 if that helps also.

Cheers! Nick.

Attached is a picture I took of my screen if this helps also: http://i43.tinypic.com/2mrxw11.jpg

This has shared video RAM, so it could be a flaky RAM chip. I'd try switching RAM chips around or hook it up to an external monitor prior to purchasing anything.

Gekozen oplossing

I have seen this same issue a few times, sadly they have always been resolved by replacing the LCD Panel. Below is a link to the guide for replacing this panel.

It may be worth reseating your display data cable to the logic board to see if there is any improvement, since you described that the fault can be altered by applying pressure around your Mac. The lines, however, certainly steer towards a faulty LCD Panel.

Hope this helps,

Wes

Thanks Wes for your answer here. I had suspected this might be the problem!

I had a quick look at the DIY screen fix. I've never attempted anything like this before.... do you think replacing it is something a beginner could do or would I be better off taking it to a repair store?

Thanks once again,

Nick.

It really depends on your technical experience, the iFixit guide rates this as a difficult repair but take a look at the guide and see if you would feel comfortable to do this yourself.
