Disc drive won't let me put a disc in, nothing in there

I can't put a disc in, there is something blocking me from putting one in, right at the front, and there isn't a disc in it - i have tried rebooting, restarting, ejecting (even though there isn't a disc in it), etc. It did this before, and fixed itself somehow, but it's not budging now. Feels mechanical, like some part of the eject mechanism is stuck on eject and not going back in???

If you are unable to push the disc in at all then it certainly does sound like a mechanical issue. It sounds as though the mechanism that stops you from inserting a disc when another disc is present has come loose. I would recommend replacing the drive rather than trying to repair it, but it may be worthwhile removing the superdrive to take a physical look to make sure nothing has sneaked its way inside.

Hope this helps,

Wes

I can insert the Dvd but it pushes back out instead of running it in..

I tried inserting the dvd (elder scrolls online) but the mechanism just won't work.

Gabriel Mattos has the correct answer. Not just remove the drive. The tray mechanism is stuck. To force eject a disk that is stuck, open TERMINAL in the UTILITIES folder of Applications inside FINDER. Run this command no parentheses (drutil eject disk) but if there is NO DISK and you can't push a disk in, put in (drutil eject tray). Note that you may have to do it several times, up to 20 Ive heard. For me, 2-4 usually works.

Guys,

I have solved this problem by simple running this line on terminal:

drutil tray eject

Hope it works.

PS & 1st UPDATE (18/10/2016)

So... I had the same issue again and I wasn't able to solve it right away. This time I've had (like some of you guys) to run the command several times. I ran it for like 20x before it finally wake up the drive and release it.

Press and hold the mouse or trackpad button down when you power it on and keep holding it down. This forces a disk eject, or at least tells the mechanism to to go through its eject cycle. This may move the mechanism to it's fully open position for you.

There are sometines screws on the top of the unit that are to be taken out before installing. It's usually clearly marked to take them out but possibly the label was missing when the unit was installed

Restart, hold eject and when you hear the noise of the drive opening sneak a disc in.

I find this is due to iTunes failing to unmount the disc or something, even after it successfully ejects it. Thereafter you need to reboot in order to insert a disc. My workaround: quit iTunes before ejecting a disc. then Eject via finder. The restart iTunes. Disc loads no problem.

I have a HP 'puter with a 'Tower' ,. One CD/DVD disk drawer would not open when button was pushed. Go to 'COMPUTER' and click on it and a selection of various drives will appear on your 'puter. EXP~~ A drive, B drive, C drive etc etc. Determine which drive icon will not slide out and RIGHT click on the icon. A box drops down . Select 'EJECT' and it should open with ease.

I have an external drive that has the above problem. So: no disk in drive, drive unplugged: I gently tapped the drive on the desk with the opening DOWN about five times. Then I dragged a SMALL nail just past the opening to try and pull out anything that may have been dislodged. Nothing came out. So I did it again. Still nothing came out. So I popped a disc in that I didn't care about into the drive and BINGO... It accepted it!

Hope this helps someone. - Lindy

I tried every to take apart and visually inspect my iMac nada good idea. after 2 hours and a whole lot of frustration I opened Terminal and entered a new command this - drutil tray eject - as suggested. 20 seconds later I was free at last. Out popped the unreadable disc. It didn't even show up on my desktop. Wowee. Thank you, thank you.

I tried everything and nothing worked. I found the answer in the comment section by dewolfeinsheepsclothes. Restart the computer. While restarting hold the eject key (Top right on mac). Hold until the desk top appears, quickly put in a cd. Finally after months I can burn cd’s again.

I tried over 50-60xs still not able to insert CD into the my 2009 MacBook Pro SuperDrive 😞☹️

These were the steps I took:

Applications->Utilities->Terminal->Shell->New Command->drutil tray eject (heard few tiny clicks but that was it). Tried to insert CD but still unable to…CD goes in about 1/4 way then like hitting a wall 🤷🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

Please let me know if I missed some steps or any other suggestions would greatly appreciated!!!

Thank you so much!!!

Hey Linda, no, you did every step pretty much right. The command works but it isn't really so much different from pressing the eject button. Just a solution that would “bypass the physical action” of ejecting. :/

It did work for me in the past but unfortunately as for every device… It could be a matter of replacing it or at least giving it some sort of maintenance.

The good thing is, it isn't really difficult or even expensive to replace it. There's even a very good tutorial around here for it:

MacBook Pro 13" Unibody Mid 2009 Optical Drive Replacement

I guess that's it. Wish you good luck with that. ;)

There is a simple cause for this. Its a result of failure of the OPTICAL DRIVE, and needs to be either replaced, or SOMETIMES I'm able to take cover off, clean and lubricate areas of the drive, and save the optical drive. it just depends if the drive is going to be cooperative. SO WHY? when you put a cd/dvd in these drives, an arm comes up that prevents another disk from being inserted. One of the many types of failures with these drives, the arm will malfunction and the arm will come up and you cannot insert a disk in the unit, even though it's empty.

If you take the unit apart, you'll see what I'm talking about and you may be able to lubricate this so that it returns to normal function. if you go to my website you can purchase repair and send it to me, or just send to me and ill give you a free estimate
