Replace screen without full disassembly?

The iFixit guide on screen replacement implies that you basically have to work from the back, removing parts as you get to the front display: Steam Deck Vervanging van het beeldscherm

However, in the video teardown, they say that you can remove the display without any disassembly by softening the glue and carving it out with a tool: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4T0RZ6us...

Is there any written documentation on the latter method or is it really that 'simple'? What are the benefits of going through the whole disassembly process per the written guide?

Because not everyone has a couple of heat guns lying around, lol , and working through the entire device is the only way you can get around that if you don't own a iopener or something equivalent to that.

also because you could damage the device if you just fling the screen off, as you have to remove the cables from the screen, and its easier to access via the back than the front

hope this helps!

Second point is fair, but I think you'll still need an iOpener or heat source either way per the documentation (step 27 onwards).

To close the loop on this -- I attempted the screen replacement by just removing the front screen. The screen can easily be removed, but unfortunately the ribbon seems to be near impossible to re-seat into the new screen from the front. I ended up doing the full disassembly per the instructions.

The steps requiring access through the back are for two reasons:

  1. To disconnect the battery
  2. To disconnect the display cable

Regardless of the method, you'll need to heat the display adhesive and get at it from the front at some point, like is described in the guides. If you do that first, before going in from the back, you'll have trouble disconnecting the display cable—or at least trouble getting it reconnected on the new display. There's not a lot of slack to work with there. You'll have to go in from the back eventually, and it's ideal to already have the display cable disconnected before removing the screen.

Hope that helps!

Is that connector a 20 pin flat lcd ribbon? Any thoughts on using a extension connector and the push the excess back into the steamdeck so you can enter from the front?
