Hi Henrietta,
As with figuring out any problem, you have to start somewhere. All modern cars incorporate computers that have the ability to diagnose and report problems, so let's start with that; if we can get the car to tell us what's wrong, we'll be way ahead in figuring out how to fix it.
So the first thing we need is a list of any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) your car is reporting. Some higher end cars will show you those codes on the dashboard display, but for most of them you need an OBD-II scanner. You can buy them online for under $10 USD, or if you're here in the US, go to any auto parts store and they'll hook their scanner up for free and give you a list of those trouble codes.
Is your Check Engine light on? Most of the serious trouble codes will cause the check engine light to come on, but not all of them do, so we want to scan the car whether it's on or not. Most of the time when there's a problem serious enough to cause a noticeable change in the way the car runs, there will be a trouble code stored.
So let's start with that; find out if there are any codes present and depending on what you find we can go from there. There are a lot of very smart people on this site who are happy to help and give excellent advice.
