After boot the mb stops running

Hi,

My mb stops after booting. It ask to restart, cancel, close. If I wait to long to cancel then it ends sudden by itself. I bought the mb on the internet and after opening the mb I discoverred that some screws are missing, for example three screws from the battery. Also the original harddrive from toshiba is missing, they changed it to à 40gb of à different brand. I managed to install osx but it keeps falling out.

Does anyone have experience with the same issues? Is it possible that the missing screws is causing this. The whole machine has been taken appart exept the keyboard and mousepad.

Thanks for tour help

THANK YOU Mayer and Lemerise for your super fast response. I appreciate it very much.

@ Mayer: I've reinstalled OSX with holding my hand on the machine :) it took 50 minutes until the end, It didn't resolve the issue but I have OSX on my mac again.

@ Lemerise: This is an excellent way to check if the top case is broken. At the moment I'm in a hotel with my wife but I can't wait to go home and continue to solve this problem. With the help of great and smart people like you I must be able to get this done. Thanks once more for your help and during next week I'll get back to you how this problem is evolving.

Pretty sure your problem is the macbook top case (power switch). Please read my answer on the same subject with the same macbook model:

off with shutdown warning message

And BTW there's no problem with the three missing battery screws. It cannot cause any issue and there are still three other screws holding the battery to the case.

Hi Lemerise,

I did what you explained and the machine keeps working so it must be the top case. I'm going to order a new one in a couple of days and fix the machine. Excellent work, thanks a lot!!

Glad we had a good diagnostic for your macbook issue. I have three of these A1342 in my shop and the power pads trick saved me lot of time troubleshooting the machines. For the replacement top case check ebay where you can get one for $60 if you find the good seller.

I'm worried about the system you installed and where it came from. Try starting from the installation disk and tell us if you get the same results as when booted from the hard drive. First Thing I would do is make sure of the system your installing. Next use Disk Utilities to "zero out option" the hard drive to map any bad blocks. Then give it one partition to set it to GUID. Tell us what the disk is before installing a system.
