Battery percentage flashes on and off

When my phone is plugged in the battery % keeps popping up in the middle of the screen like it does when your first plug your phone in. It pops up about every 5-10 minutes, says the %, and the green circle showing its plugged in, then goes away. It happens with all of my chargers. I even bought new ones and it's still happening.

Hi Bree,

It really sounds like you've got a bad connection in the charging port. Have you tried holding the plug in different positions and seeing if it maintains charging as it's being held? That would say the port is worn or possibly obstructed.

First thing to do is figure out if it's charging correctly or not. You can confirm a problem with the port by putting it on a wireless charger; if it charges normally then your charging circuit is fine and it's almost definitely just the connector on the charging port.

Next step is to try a non-surgical approach; take some 90% or higher isopropyl alcohol (not the 70% stuff we all have around the house) and clean the port as best you can with maybe like a toothpick and a microfiber eyeglass cloth. That's been known to clear up a lot of charging problems and hopefully it will help yours.

If not, then having eliminated chargers and cords, we're left with the prospect of replacing the charging port itself. You're actually lucky with your phone in that the charging port is on a separate circuit board from the logic board so it's a relatively straight-forward repair for a cell phone. iFixit even carries the genuine Samsung part you need, although it appears it comes in two versions; one for the Verizon phone and one for everyone else in the U.S.

To be honest, you can probably find the part cheaper on sites like Amazon, eBay or AliExpress, but by buying it here you're also supporting iFixit's repair efforts in maintaining this site and creating new guides.

If you don't have the tools you need to do the job, for an extra $7 you can get it with the Fix Kit that includes the part, the rear glass adhesive and all the tools necessary. If you don't get the fix kit, be sure and buy the adhesive to hold the rear cover back on once you're done with your repair. Pro tip: I usually buy more than one because they're easy to mess up and you don't want to have to wait until your reorder comes in to finish the job.

Here's the repair guide you'll need to replace the charging port board.
