Computer waking by itself while asleep.

My girlfriend's Macbook keeps on waking up on its own while it is asleep. This has been randomly happening while closed (without selecting sleep from the menu first) and while open (when sleep is selected from the menu). It usually happens several times in a row and then stops. Is there anyway to fix this?

A possibility: is your girlfriend using an Apple Remote Control for her iPod or her Apple TV? If so, this would interact with her computer as well. If that's a problem, Apple Menu --> Preferences --> Security --> Disable Apple Remote Control for this system.

Apples by default wake for Ethernet access. Disable this in the energy settings of your mac, sometimes a packet of info sent to the computer could cause it to wake on its own.

this would only apply if the MacBook is physically connected to ethernet, this setting does not apply if just using wifi.

We tried disconnecting her portable hard drive and ethernet and she doesn't have any bluetooth devices. Just moments after we put her computer to sleep, it tried to wake at least 6 times. I've also tried resetting the SMC, but moments after we closed it, it happened again. I just reset the PRAM and now we're waiting for the verdict on that one.

The answers to this question should get you started. This is more likely a software problem than hardware.

Another thing to check - does she have a bluetooth device paired with the MacBook? Have seen this behavior with certain brands of bluetooth mice which send a burst of radio traffic when the mouse goes into sleep mode. This of course, then kicks the notebook into clamshell mode.

try turning off bluetooth on the MacBook, and testing if this resolves the issue.

Does it happen when logged in to a different account? When booted to an external or a CD?
