The original Xbox is Microsoft's first widely popular video gaming system. It has an easily identifiable black case with 'XBOX' emblazoned on the top and front. Repair is easy with common tools.

OG Xbox not turning on.

I have an OG Xbox that was in storage until now. I plugged it into the wall and the video connected to my Tv, but no lights or sound when pressing either the on or eject button. When opening the Xbox, I found three capacitors bulging and a burn mark on the top side of the power supply board. I have ordered all replacement capacitors for the motherboard, but what else can I do about the power supply? There is no output voltage on the power supply, no caps bulging either, just a burn mark on the topside. Will a PC power supply with enough amps connected properly work in powering it?

What about that long black component with 4 pins?

door

@xert gamer13 I'm assuming it's the bridge rectifier (turning AC to DC). If the component (or the silk print on the PCB) shows a +, a - and two ~then it's 100% the bridge rectifier

door

xert gamer13 if you want to recap it, replace all the caps. Right now on your images I do not see one that would worry me unless you have measured the failure. Post some clean pictures of the top side and the bottom side. Straight on so we can actually see the whole power supply. the scorched part is indeed a rectifier. Question now is why did it scorch. Is there a heatsink on it?

@geirandersen what do you make out of the situation in the last picture? The Through -the-hole looks different.

@oldturkey03 xert gamer 13 WHOAH... That looks like severely oxidized solder on there! My first instinct was that there must have been oxidization built up and that has caused a short, which roasted the board, but I can't be sure.

Definitely doesn't look right, that's for sure. Especially the lower right (next to the ring finger) solder joints.

since we do not yet know why your PSU has gone off in smoke let me answer the later part of your question. Yes, you can use an ATX PSU to power your Xbox. Check on places like this to see what it is all about. Now on here you can see how you would need to connect the individual points from ATX to Xbox

Thanks for the wiring diagram, quick question tho. The Power On, Power Ok and Standby worry me. Can I wire the Power On to Ground, a 3.3V wire from ATX to Power Ok and a 5V wall charger to buck converter as Standby 3.3V? Will it work long term or no? As of now I do not care for small form factor. The buck converter is the board that uses the LM2596.

@xert gamer13 not quite sure what you mean by this "Can I wire the Power On to Ground" Power to ground is never really a good idea. The Standby idea should work. No reason why it wouldn't

door

@oldturkey03 Sorry, what I meant was, I heard that ATX needed the 'Power On' to be grounded to start supplying power. I saw that the 'Power On' from an OG Xbox power supply was 3.3V, but the one from an ATX is 5V. Is it ok to wire the 5V 'Power On' to the board, or just wire it to Ground externally to let the ATX stay on at all times?

door

@xert gamer13 really whatever is easiest for you. You could leave the power supply running or just unplug it after you are done with it. The nice and neater way would be to connect it and maybe a buck converter to get the 3.3 V
