Won’t complete bootup

2009 21.5 iMac. After a very brief power fluctuation (sudden power loss , 3 second outage and the power came back) I attempted to turn my iMac back on. The iMac will chime, the Apple logo will appear and the progress bar will go across the screen until the veery end and then the computer will just stop. I have reset the PRAM and was able to boot into the disk utility and perform a a disk repair. but the iMac still shows the same issue. I am stumped. Any ideas?

Sounds like a possible RAM problem or a dying HDD. Did the iMac say the HDD was successfully repaired? First point of call should definitely be trying some different RAM.

The iMac did say it was successfully repaired. I did remove some of the RAM but the same problems occurred

I removed all of the RAM, added one of the RAM by itself into the iMac and then performed a boot up. No change… the iMac boots up , the startup bong hits and the progress bar starts up and then …nothing. The progress bar just stops. I did this with each of the existing RAM sticks of this iMac. I even tried some extra RAM modules that I had stored away but the same results occur

I’m confused as I am able to get into the disk utility and I’m told that the disk drive is fine. Is it a hardware or software issue ? Would a reinstall of Mac OS X solve this boot issue?
