MacBook Air with hi-speed fans and pfm006 ppn001 message

Hi everyone,

all of a sudden yesterday my Macbook Air 13" I5 started having loud fans and being a bit jittery.

This is what I did:

  • reset PRAM and SNC
  • cleaned system cache
  • cleaned login elements
  • rebooted in recovery mode and checked disk (HD was not mounted) >
  • managed to mount HD and run repair, after that volumes looked all ok
  • run diagnostics and then it gives pmf006 and ppn001 (plus ppt002 - low life battery) messages

No spillage has happened, nothing stranger than usual.

Logic board was changed by Apple in Dec. 2021

By running Acitvity Monitor the CPU load lies at max 60% (mainly kernel_task) and the temperature is 42/43°C...

macOs is Mojave 10.14.6

I am scratching my head. Anyone has some suggestions on what could be the issue here and how to fix it? I'd be extremely appreciative of any hint or tips!

Update (09/16/2022)

Thanks a lot Dan...here are the screenshots from both apps

Any idea?

Thanks indeed...

Given the systems age I'm suspecting the battery is just worn-out.

Let’s get a better view of things, install this gem of an app! CoconutBattery take a snapshot of the apps main window and post it here for us to see.

I've often seen this with bad battery thermal sensor. You could also install TG Po and post a snapshot of it as well.

Marti - @process_gone did you try replacing the battery? Did it solve your issue? I have exactly the same issue and similar MBA, been banging my head at different posts on internet. Would appreciate your response.

Martina Bertoni - I moved your question to its own space - Battery & diagnostics errors as well as high kernal_task process

I am having the same issue and same diag codes 2017 MacBook Pro. Did changing new battery worked out for you guys? Went into Apple yesterday and it cost $400 to replace the battery so ordered one on eBay to replace it myself.

Yep! You need a new battery! MacBook Air 13" (Late 2010-2017) Battery and here's the guide MacBook Air 13" Mid 2013 Vervanging van de batterij

As you can see the cycle could is over the expected cycle count of 1k Determine battery cycle count for Mac notebooks besides a battery life is about 4~5 years which clearly long since passed as this is the original battery!

FYI: I use my 2011 15" MacBook Pro system (has a 2012 logic board now) every day doing quite a lot, I'm on my 7th battery, just installed. I get about three years of life per battery.
