Google Chrome seems broken on my aging MacBook Pro

Late 2011 MBP running 10.12 Sierra. Google Chrome has become laggy to the point of near-unusability in the last week or two. It seems like it maybe coincided with the update to Chrome v99. Is it becoming incompatible with my outdated OS?

This laptop generally still performs very well -- Firefox & Safari are still zippy.

Chrome has the same issues in Incognito Mode so it's not a problem with any of my extensions.

I'm planning to replace this ancient computer soon but I'd love to be able to continue using Chrome in the meantime!

How much free space does your system have on its drive? Did you try flushing the cache and temp files?

Ample free space -- 100GB+

I've deleted the cached images & files to almost no noticeable improvement

You'll need to boot up under recovery (Command (⌘)-R) so you can gain access to Disk Utility within it (not the one within your booting drive as it won't let you run repair). You likely have a corruption.

Do you still have a HDD or did you upgrade it to a SSD?
