Can't activate internal disk0s2 after ssd upgrade

Hello and thank you for your online help and manuals but i couldn’t find a solution for my problem… i upgraded my hdd to a ssd in my iMac 27 late 2012 fusion drive because the hhd broke down.

now i can see the internal apple drive (disk0s2) in disk utility but it is not activated and i can’t activate it. if i try to activate it shows an error: 119930868

if someone knows how to solve this problem i would be very thankful because i have data on it… thats also the reason why i didn’t try to erase it.

Lets first look at what a Fusion Drive its a little wacky! Your system has two drive connections the 3.5” SATA port (used by the HDD) and a custom SATA blade connection which holds a 128 GB SSD.

Your data is strictly on the HDD, the SSD is strictly used as a cache drive, it holds data blocks not complete files! Which are requested more frequently. So, If your HDD died then you’ve lost any data which was on it. Hopefully you’ve got things backed up.

OK how to get your system going, you’ll need to setup a bootable OS installer USB thumb drive so you can boot up under it to break the Fusion Drive set (thats with both of your original drives installed following this guide How to Delete or Split Your Mac's Fusion Drive This should release the blade SSD. Once done using disk utility delete the partitions on the blade SSD and setup a GUID partition with a journaled file system. Now we can replace the HDD with the SSD. Do keep in mind you will need this iMac Intel 21.5" and 27" (Late 2012-Early 2019) SSD Temperature Sensor as your system won’t run properly without it as your systems SMC services needs access to the HDD’s thermal sensor which is now gone! This sensor replaces it.

With the SSD in place using your bootable OS installer you should be able to again setup the drive with a GUID partition map, then setup a partition and format with a journaled file system. Then run the OS installer of the macOS you want to use.

Be aware High Sierra will convert the file system from HFS+ to APFS which many 3rd party OS tools won’t work properly with. In addition going higher than Mojave you’ll loose 32bit application support.

so you say there are no “real” data on the blade ssd which i could loose? yes my hdd died and now a company tries to repair it… does that mean i don’t need the blade ssd any longer for the data which are on the 1tb hdd?

after the upgrading process everything is running fine. so the ssd is already in my mac an running catalina. the old hdd isn’t in the imac anymore and now the blade ssd is greyed out and i can’t activate it. i thought there are also data of mine there but due to your reply i could try erasing it or what else could i try if i have already upgraded it?

@big - The difference is files vs blocks, files are complete, blocks aren't.

OK at this point forget about your blade SSD as its not really sizable enough for serious work. You could set it up as a bootable drive to use as a recovery drive. I often do that for systems that still have a HDD type of drive (I had often installed a hybrid drive which is a single drive that has a built-in caching SSD). These days I just leave the SSD as unused in this series when installing a much larger 2.5" SSD. drive.

I would install a good thermal monitoring app like TG Pro it will help you see what's going on with the systems SMC services.

yes i understand that 128 is not that much and that i could forget about it. it is not about the space... i am afraid of loosing data and don't know what to do about it... how can i safe my data? can i safe them with only repearing the hdd or does this only work together with the blade ssd because it is a fusion drive?

@big - You really need an external drive to be fully safe! Then using the TimeMachine app make backups to the external drive of your stuff.

A Fusion Drive does not make you safer! It was a panacea when SSD's where still quite costly and people wanted the speed they could offer.

It's more of a halfway point between a slow HDD and a fast SSD. Fusion Drives are no longer used. SSD's are much cheaper today and offer even more speed.

The blade SSD in your case is just like your appendix in your belly not used any more.
