Where are the temperature sensors of the iPhone 8?

I’ve been having problems with my iPhone giving false high temperature warnings, disabling the flashlight and camera flash due to “temperature being too hot” and the most annoying one: The screen can’t go over 50% of the brightness because of this

I tried a new battery that I intend to return now because even after that, the problem remained. I tried with the home button cable disconnected, with the both cameras disconnected etc. None of that has worked, which leads me to believe the problem is in one of the motherboard sensors

I tried looking into the logs after I had already made some posts in r/ifixit and r/iPhonehelp, what I found was what I THINK is the phone reporting missing temperature sensors (https://imgur.com/a/a3NP1mG), perhaps the sensor can’t read a temperature? And a TH_SFLAG_throttled (https://imgur.com/a/JiPkzoE) 16 lines long log that was repeated uncountable times.

That means couldn’t find any actual temperature reading, which leaves me in a dark spot without knowing which sensor is the problem. The only option that remained is covering all those sensors, but I have no idea where they are located at, any help is appreciated!

Hi Gabriel,

Have you tried doing a hard reset of the phone, completely wiping it and reinstalling iOS? The issue “thermalmonitord returned not alive” kind of hints to me that there could be a software problem, but the iOS logging isn’t really detailed enough to know for sure.

I also second Chris’s suggestion of replacing the lightning connector, there’s a similar thread I found where this fixed an iPhone 11 that was throwing a similar error.

Here’s a guide that explains how to “restore” your iPhone, completely erasing it and reinstalling iOS.

I have tried “hard resets” like clicking the volume up, down and holding the power button, but no hard resets like reinstalling the OS itself. I have a backup of my phone in iTunes in a computer, but had no idea you could reinstall the actual OS, would that be restoring the phone to factory settings or using one of those third party programs that offer to redownload it?

Unfortunately, the phone deleted that thermal monitor log and didn’t generate any new one since then, so I can’t give any more details other than the screenshots. That log does look similar, though mine reports multiple missing sensors

I already tried anything in my reach, so I’m up to any idea now, from reinstalling iOS to replacing the whole port (which I’ve done in other iPhones before, so I know it’s painful, F Apple lol).

I had already lost my hope, as I got no replies in r/iOS and r/IFixIt didn’t help much, I had only created this acc to translate guides, so I really appreciate yours and Chris’ help! Sadly,I can’t give awards here ha

@gagra I updated my answer with a link to Apple guide for "restoring" the iPhone by reinstalling iOS. Might be worth a shot before replacing more hardware.

Hey, I tried restoring the iPhone but that did not work even setting it as new

I accidentally bought only the charging-audio flex cable (https://imgur.com/a/4xsAlhY), which it means it didn’t have the charging port itself, but I replaced that part and the problem kept happening

Is the thermal sensor on the lightning port itself? It took me some time to buy and have the time to replace and get back to here and i won’t be able to change anything on the phone in the next week, which is really a bummer, screen not going past 50% brightness is the worst part for me, even when the phone is cold

The only temp sensors I have come across on the iPhone 8 have been located in the parts of the phone like battery, cameras and the dock connector. There might be one in the Wi-Fi chip but I cannot confirm.

When it comes to temp sensor problems the most common cause is a faulty dock connector. You will need to replace this first.

When I searched about the problem, most people reported fixing it by changing the battery, but this didn’t work. As I already tried using with the cameras disconnected, I though there was only the CPU, GPU etc sensors, from what I saw, they are called

“NTC”

By a faulty dock connector you mean I have to try changing the charging port? Had never heard about the term “dock connector”, but I searched it in IFixIt and it seems to be the lighting port, right? This will be my next thing to try, if so. Thanks for your help

@gagra Yes the lightning port.
