After new hard drive, can't load os from dvd
Just had dead hard drive replace. Using grey disc to reload os 10.4 onto hard drive. iMac says "can't load this software onto this computer"

The grey OS discs are usually specific to a particular machine, they may not have some of the machine specific drivers you iMac needs.
Did the grey disc you are using come with this machine? if not you should try a generic full OS X 10.4 install disc

I lost my install discs and bought new ones off of ebay. As best as I could tell, I matched the specifications. Where can I get a generic full os 10.4 install disc?
