Why is my laptop’s WiFi so slow (Tx rate very low)?

Hi everyone,

This is definitely a laptop issue as I’ve tested different laptops against my WiFi at home, restarted the router, tried different locations, and still it’s just my laptop with this problem. The tx rate is low. Right now, it’s at 1. The WiFi router is literally just the room next to me! The highest it’s been is around 80 tx rate.

This became an issue probably around March this year, it was never like this before.

It also has issues sometimes connecting to my phone hotspot so there is an issue but I’m not sure what steps to take first!

Do I need to repair anything inside?
What can you recommend please!

Thank you!

The first thing I would do is alter your WiFi AP names for each band as an example

  • ACME-2_4
  • ACME-5_0

So you can distinguish which band your system is connecting over. When you have a single name ACME there is no way to know!

This is important as you’ll want to flush out your network cache. Open up your Network control panel and click on the Advanced… Button to open up settings window you’ll want to delete the preferred Networks and do make sure you note the passwords before you delete them so you can add it back.

Here’s a useful tool WiFi Exporer so you can see your connections.

Next I would inspect the antennas exiting the hinge area as sometimes they get damaged if not properly seated. Follow this guide MacBook Pro 15" Unibody Mid 2012 AirPort/Bluetooth Board Replacement to Step 10 so you can get under the board to inspect the cables entering the hinge if the wires look damaged you’ll need a nw antenna unit.

Hi Dan, thank you for the quick response! I'm not familiar with Wifi AP name? Please can you let me know - I'm happy to get the Wifi explorer app if thats the only way I can alter Wifi AP?

@kresan - AP = WiFi Access Point

Basically, its your Routers settings you need to alter.

WiFi Explorer will allow you to see the radio bands and your systems connection to the AP.

Hi @danj, thank you. I’m not sure that changing my router is the solution as the laptop Tx rate is bad wherever I go… I’ve just opened up my laptop to see if there is any damage in the laptop wifi/airport cable but all looks fine. I’m thinking to buy a replacement WiFi ribbon on eBay and change it using the instructions above.

@kresan - Your system offers two bands 2.4GHZ and 5.0GHz the application I pointed you to will tell you which one you are connecting to.

Think of it this way... You have a major highway running through town that also has a feeder road on each side, but the feeder has sets of lights all the way through the town and you need to get through quickly which path would you take the highway or the feeder? Both will get you through time one is slower than the other.

This is the same here you have a faster 5.0GHZ band and a slower 2.4GHz band. Which one are you connecting to? If both are named the same you can't tell ACME but which? Renaming the AP's allows you to select the one you want. There is a bit of a trade-off as the 5.0GHz band doesn't reach as far as the 2.4GHz but that's OK as you'll elect the 5.0 band as the priority and the 2.4 will be the secondary when your to far or a thick wall is stopping the signal.

I would start there is a lot cheaper and I doubt the ribbon cable is your issue.
