iPhone XS automatically shuts down once plugged to charger

Recently I replaced my iPhone Xs battery, my phone was working fine in starting for at least one week, then problem comes, here is weird problem, when i plugged to charger it start charging like normal, once screen goes dim & phone goes to auto lock, within one minute it auto shutdown & won’t charge, even if i press power button, it won’t power on, unplugged and plugged again, no effect, normally with plugged to charger iphone power turn on , but this won’t happen in my case, now if i unplugged to charger for 5 seconds, phone auto turn on & i even no need to press power button, weird thing is if i plugged to charger and let phone screen keep on, it charging normal like normal, phone battery work fine & it never goes auto off phone while using phone, not sure where to start find problem, as i already destroy my old original battery while trying to change original protection board of battery, i broke original battery flex cable, so i don’t have any other battery which i can try to check if that is battery faulty or phone motherboard it self or it might be charging board, phone can connect to pc with no issue and as i said it charging battery with no problem if phone screen is on so what i am doing is make auto lock never & make brightness to zero, so let it charge my phone, once it 100% i make it back to auto lock & increases brightness to normal, but this is not the solution, so i am wondering if anybody know what is all that, have anyone else faced similar problem?

any help shall be highly appreciated,

Thanks.

Does the phone get unnaturally hot when charging?

door

No its not, either i let screen keep on while charging or phone auto shut, in both cases it not get hot at all

door

Have you tried making a back up of all the data on the device when it will operate fine, and then erasing everything from the device? This will help you make sure it isn't software related issue before you start replacing more components in the device.

@smashedliam

I had not tried yet, let me try this first

Bro I have this exact problem, it’s so weird I am starting to think it’s a firmware issue??

This is my issue with my XS right now. My workaround is to play Spotify on loop with a playlist long enough for a full charge, plug the charger, then turn off the screen.

I wonder, would a wireless charger be an effective workaround?

Update: About a week after I had posted this, I noticed that I could go back to charging the old way - iPhone on standby and no music running. Really strange how it “self-healed” after a while. Apart from the workaround of having spotify play in the background while charging, I don’t recall doing anything else out of the ordinary. So far, so good…

@migoymigs Have you updated your iPhone?

This method use to work until today. It kept shutting down on me today.

Why is this only happening to iPhone xs users?

I also have same issue. Did you find any good solution because earphones also not working on it@migoymigs

Recently, my iPhone XS started to getting worst.

I reported in 2022 that it would restart itself if it entered standby mode during charging.

Yesterday, it started to restart itself once the phone entered standby mode.

The process drain out the battery quickly.

Today, I updated to iOS 16.3. This issue seems go away. I have tested 4-5 times.

Hopefully it really solved the issue.

door

Just an update to my Feb 5 post. My iPhone XS started to restarting itself after 2-3 power off/on.

Then, I reset the phone to factory default. It stayed ok at factory default. After I sync my backup back to the phone, the issue appeared again.

So, I suspect there is some conflict with some apps.

Slowly, I upgraded the apps 1-3 apps at a time. After the update I put the phone into standby mode to check whether it will reset.

This effort and issue last for the next 2-3 days.

Then on Sunday, I realised the issue go away.

The last 4 apps that upgraded in last 2 days are Amazon Shopping, WhatsApp, Skype and PRISM+ Connect.

Hope this info help you solve similar issue like me.

I have the same problem. I'm using iPhone Xs. It happened to me yesterday and now I have to use the phone while charging. I think this is a firmware issue. I think this can be fixed with DFU Restore.

Did you get yours fix through DFU Restore?

door

I did a DFU restore. I think my phone just crashed, During the installing process, the phone is supposed to reboot, but it couldn’t because of course the lightening cable is plugged in. Now it’s showing me a laptop sign and an Apple site to visit.

I think I’m going to change my charging port and see if it works, if it doesn’t, I’ll just change the batter and try as well.

door

Update. After it crashed, i changed the charging port flex and restored it. Now everything is working perfectly.

door

So changing the charging port flex is the fix?? Currently having this problem now. At first my power bank could not charge my phone later my fast charger anytime I plug it and the phone goes dark it goes off

door

Voeg een opmerking toe

Okay I had this workaround since the music player trick also stopped working.

I'm not sure what's really at fault but mine went back to normal when I did this, after hours of being frustrated because I can no longer use my lightning earphones.

1. iPhone will turn off once lightning connector is plugged.

  1. Phone will turn on once lightning connector is unplugged. Apple logo will come out.
  2. Count to SEVEN and plug the lightning connector back, waiting until the iPhone finishes its boot-up process.
  3. Once your lock screen flashes, you can now use your lightning connectors normally.

    Repeat if it fails.

I'm really not sure why it works, but apparently, the issue returns if I swiftly remove the lightning connector. I repeated the process above and again, iPhone goes back to working normally.

I suspect this is really some bug.

PS:

I can confirm that this could be a combination of a bug and a charging port flex issue. For some reason, I feel like when the port was shorted or slightly bent, and whatever electrical flow activated during connection of the lightning connector to the port causes the system to restart or shut down. A slow insertion of the lightning connector at an angle to the port during boot up seems to solve the problem every time.

BUT in my case after updating to IOS 16, this only happens when connecting earphones through the lightning port - USB lightning connection seems to have been resolved.

door

Ooops. Nope. Problem still persists, but with variations of severity. Hahahaha.

This is a bug.

door

Definitely a bug. It's now resolved.

I am also suffering the same issue. Iphone xs getting switch off after connecting the lighting cable. My battery health shows 81% & I have done the factory reset as well but problem still exists.

After removing the lighting cable, apple logo appears and again getting off after screen goes to off.

Note that - apart from playing a song and connecting to the charger, Removing the screen timer do we have anything to recover this issue

Is this happens due to software bug?

I think there are few possible causes:

  1. iPhone has detected connectivity issue with cable. Verify with an original hood iPhone cable to confirm.
  2. iPhone firmware issue. Verify by setting ‘Auto-Lock’ to ‘Never’
  3. Battery issue.

But last night my battery was like 20% and I forgot to charge it and when I woke up it showed the sign of my phone needed to charge right now. But the problem is when I put my charger on, my xs will instantly shut down... so I cant charge my phone right now.. at all.

Try charging with PC to check whether it can stay on.

If it can stay on, switch off the auto-lock feature.

door

Set ‘Auto-Lock’ to ‘Never’ then trun down brightness of your phone. Then plug in. This way you can charge your phone.

This auto turn off issue comes time to time for me. I don’t know permanent fix for this. Probably this is a firmware issue.

my issues started around the time I started using power bank to change my phone not am not able to charge it

what happens is when you plug the cable in or when you put the phone on a charging pad the phone shuts off

tries to turn its self on but the screen flashes for a second during the logo appearance and never comes back on

just keeps repeating the same thing

  1. logo appears
  2. screen flash on left and right sides of the screen
  3. repeat

I tried everything that you can find online.

The playing songs etc while charging didn't work.

Resetting no go.

Apps updated nothing helped.

If I were to guess it must be a battery issues that prevents it to bootup.

I will let you know if I find a fix.

I have this exact problem right now and here's my attempt to charge the phone so far (unfortunately it doesn't resolve the problem) :/

Anyway, here's the methods:

  1. disable the auto-lock feature so your phone will not go into lock-screen mode, then charge your phone (if you're using the official iPhone charger with 1A output)
  2. no need to disable the auto-lock feature so that your phone stay "on" at all times (i.e. charge as per normal), BUT you need to use a higher output charger (eg iPad charger or Power Bank with at least 2.1A output or above)

Hope they help!

Whenever i plugin my iPhone charger or earphones charger to the port, it gets switched off and as soon as i remove the charger from port, the apple logo appears(Phone Restart happens). Solution:
Restore iPhone. Means a complete wipeout, different from the usual reset or erase. Doing that and restoring a Finder Mac iTunes backup will bring back issue still.

Thereafter, restore from iCloud backup. The only way forward. And do not let your battery drop below 20% anymore.

After I did the above, the issue went away. Just hours ago, when I inevitably had to drop the battery below 20% because I did not have my charger, the issue has come back. Hence as follows.

My XS max used to switch off when the charging pin was connected and switch on again after the pin was disconnected. If the phone got heated up, the charging % was very less.. I had switched to charging by a wireless charger for the last 6 months.

after the recent update to iOS 17.1, wireless charging also failed.. I took the phone to a local unofficial Apple service who diagnosed the problem was due to charging port. He replaced the port and the phone is now charging well, like before 😀 whew!
