SD Card Not Detected

So I am trying to transfer pokemon from an old 3ds game to my switch, however I dont have a 3ds anymore, so I borrowed one from my friend.

I put the microSD in the adapter, then into the 3ds, but I get the message “Could not detect an SD Card. The software on the SD Card could not be displayed.” This is weird to me because before this (when there ACTUALLY was no SD card) I would get no message, so it has to know there is something there, right?

Did I order the wrong SD card, one that simply will not work with the 3ds? If so, what card does work? If not, what else did I do wrong and how can I fix this?
