I have to unplug/reconnect battery and attach magsaf to turn laptop on

To turn on my Macbook Pro I have to disconnect/reconnect battery and attach magsafe charge cable before powering on. Once it powers on I can disconnect magsafe and it holds charge fine. but once I turn it off it will not turn back on with or without the magsafe attached. I then have to repeat the above procedure to turn on every single time. Help!

This symptom is post replacing screen and keyboard as well as applying fresh thermal paste. So obviously I did something when I took it apart I simply do not know what and have not found an existing answer to this issue.

I have done spotaneous reboot (Unplug the battery and the magSafe. Press and hold the power on button for 10 seconds. Reconnect the battery and Mag-Safe.)

I have also done power on for two-three cycles while holding command+option+P+R

Any other tricks out there that can help me?

This issue is totally worth having the numbers on my keyboard work and the screen fixed. However, having the luxury of being able to power on without unscrewing the base plate unplugging/reconnecting the battery and plugging into the magsafe charge cord is something that I hope I can get back.

Let’s put this into perspective you have an old 2010 car what is the likelihood you’ve replaced the battery at least once or even twice by now?

Well just like a car battery Lithium-Ion batteries need to be replaced either from running a lot of load cycles (which is true in your case 1,499) as well as age! You’ve already replaced it once before (new battery in 2013) and you need a new one once again!

Hey Brian O’Malley,

I had a similar situation to what you are experiencing on a 2014 MacBook Air. But first I have a few questions.

What was your motive to replace the screen and keyboard. Did your computer experience any sort of liquid damage?

Also, once your computer is booted up does the power button work at all?

The MacBook Air I mentioned earlier had experienced water damage. It had the very same problems that you mention where in order to get it to boot I would have to first disconnect the battery then reconnect it then connect the MagSafe cord. At this point the computer would automatically boot up by itself.

My MacBook Air also showed signs indicative of needing an SMC reset but since the power button was broken on my computer I could not execute one. I even replaced the entire keyboard but (which on my model contains the power button) but it did not fix the power button.

It was many months later that I found out that the Trackpad ribbon cable is also responsible for carrying current for parts of the keyboard including the power button. By replacing this cable I was able to fix my power key.

It occurred to me that maybe you need to make sure that your trackpad cable is securely back in place after reassembling you computer.

If that doesn’t work, maybe its worth considering replacing the trackpad cable to see if that helps.

So sorry to hear that, man! I had high hopes the trackpad cable would do the trick. Sorry it didn’t.

@mfirestar - The battery is in trouble! It needs to be released. Review the CoconutBattery snapshot and Determine battery cycle count for Mac notebooks The battery has 1,500 cycles on it and the battery limit is 1,000 clearly Brian as squeezed out every electrons worth of energy out of it. And besides, when a battery get up in the stratosphere like this one it swells! So its likely pressing on the cables as well.
