Monitor flicker, fade, persistence and rough sounding right speaker.

I’ve been having intermittent image persistence on my monitor for a while now as well as the entire image ‘falling down’ for a second. The latter is most apparent when the apple logo/progress bar on a black screen appears during startup.

Interestingly the problem has also been associated with a very harsh sound coming from the left speaker.

Today the monitor problem became worse with the entire screen flickering and washing out with a blue field of vertical lines. At the same time an external monitor works fine and the sound from headphones connected via the 9 mm jack is fine.

Could this be liquid damage? I’ve been wiping the keyboard with ethanol lately.

Lets see if you get any errors with the onboard diagnostics. Restart your system and press the D key to enter, let us know what you get.

Hristo Houbaviy, as @danj suggested, please do run the diagnostics... but one question.

Did you mean you are wiping down the keyboard with 100% isopropyl or a water/ethanol mixture?? Since ethanol is what's in alcohol (i.e.- vodka), there is water content and if you are doing this, please STOP.

You can use 100% isopropyl alcohol (sometimes labelled 99%) because it evaporates and leaves almost no trace and removed oil. However, it is not a good disinfectant like 50% isopropyl. 50% isopropyl does contain water so that's something to be aware of.

I had a client who purchased a UV light and used it on their macbook to destroy bacteria/viruses but I cannot make any claims to it's effectiveness.

@dunc Ethanol = ethyl alcohol does not contain water. 70% ethanol does (30% water). Regarding the suggestion to use isopropanol - that tends to dissolve plastic. Specifically retina display coatings. At any rate the damage has been done. The advantage of ethanol is that it evaporates really fast - no time to cause corrosion damage, but it might still cause a short.

The distorted sound could mean that one of the cones on your speakers is damaged, which can produce a crackling and a quieter output sound. If you are able to open up you machine you could check whether your speakers are intact.

Is your screen still moving freely and without any play or wobble? You might find that your hinges are loose and by opening and closing the wires catch and causing your screen to play up.
