Will fixing a metal plate to the back affect GPS reception?

We're making a child proof iPad case that will add two big handles to the side of the iPad by sticking a big plate of metal to the whole back. When it covers the black area of the GPS antenna, will it affect the reception of it?

Rolf,

I don't imagine that your GPS will be greatly affected, if it is even affected at all. There are often much larger and thicker obstacles between you and your GPS source, such as walls, cars, people and several hundred miles.

Thanks Philip! But why does Apple put the black plastic part there then? Must be for the same reasons?

I honestly couldn't tell you. I stared at one and didn't see anything significant and I don't see anything exciting about it in our guides. It's possible that it might house the GPS antenna to isolate it from shorting? But perhaps another user has an answer to it's functionality :)
