Mac is running but no display

A friend asked me to check their MacBook Pro 17” Late 2011, because it totally stopped powering on (no power indicator and fans are not working). I was able to turn it on, by using another adapter / charger and replaced the RAM sticks, but there is no display. I can only hear the chime and the fans spinning/ I also see the display’s backlight turn on then off again, so I tried to shine a bright flashlight to see if its just the backlight that’s broken, but I can’t see anything. I also tried to reseat the display cable.

Sounds like your logic board has a bad capacitor in the graphics logic. You’ll need to find someone with the deeper micro soldering skills to fix this.

Can I plug a display cable instead of using the built-in display, and treat it like a desktop or do I need to have the capacitor fixed?

@mylesuy - I doubt the external display will work, but its worth a try! You'll need to get the DVI to HDMI, VGA or DisplayPort adapter to test it out.
