Failed (?) battery replacement in a Touchbar (2017) MBP

My mid-2017 15” Touchbar Macbook Pro was working fine, except the battery life was down to less than an hour. I replaced the battery with one from ifixit, following the repair guide at MacBook Pro 15" Touch Bar 2017 Vervanging van de batterij. Things seemed to go smoothly (and I had previously replaced the battery in my daughter’s similar machine successfully), but it now will not boot.

With power adapter not plugged in, hitting the power button results in a battery icon with a sliver of red with an icon of a plug with an arrow pointing to a lightning bolt below it. This displays for several seconds (and the haptic feedback on the touchpad is active during this time), and then the machine goes completely dead again.

With the power adapter plugged in, same thing but with just the lightning bolt icon below the battery icon. I’ve left it plugged in to the power adapter overnight with no change.

I’ve tried the resetting the SMC key combination, though I’m not sure if this actually does anything when the machine won’t even boot?

I’d like to hook the old battery back up temporarily to see if that fixes things but

a) I doubt it would because shouldn’t these machines boot when hooked up to power even with no battery? (and I’ve tried disconnecting both the big battery power connector and the battery board connector and get the same results).

and

b) It looks impossible to hook up the old battery without removing the new one because of the way the battery cabling runs, and I’m afraid I’d damage the new battery getting it uglued.

Further ideas?

"All is well" may have been an overstatement.

It boots now, but says battery is at 1% and doesn't seem to be charging. Though it then dies immediately if I unplug the power cord. I'll try letting it sit plugged in for a while and see what happens.

Indeed, all is not well.

It will boot now, with my power brick and my daughter's Apple OEM cable (my daughter's laptop charges fine with either brick and either cable). But the system doesn't seem to see the new battery at all: the MacOS System Information has the serial number, etc. from the old battery and says no battery is installed. Can't attach screenshots to a reply, but added to them to a separate "answer".

Let's give this a try reset the SMC following this Apple T/N How to reset the SMC of your Mac

See if that resets things otherwise you'll need to contact the iFixit Store for an battery exchange.

Thanks Dan! One whole thread has disappeared from this question, but I did try resetting the SMC and the result was that the system forgot all the old battery's info (appropriately) but it still does not recognize the new battery at all. I guess I'll try to get another new battery...

@danj, ifixit agreed to send out another battery. While waiting for it, I swapped my old one back in, and it works fine (except the battery life is less than an hour), so the problem definitely was a defective ifixit replacement battery. Thanks again for your help tracking that down.

At this point you need a USB-C power meter like this one USB-C Digital Voltmeter Tester

I’m suspecting you have a power system failure which could be the charger, USB-C cable or the logic board power logic. The USB-C meter will help you isolate the first two.

I don't think the charger or the cable is the issue - I've tried multiple chargers and cables, and they all work with my daughter's laptop and none work with mine.

mmm... Did you try the other USB-C ports?

Are you using the original Apple charger and is your daughters the same model so its the same charger?

Yes, tried all 4 USB-C ports. Yes, original Apple charger(s). No, not exactly the same two chargers - my laptop is 15" and hers is 13", so my power brick is an 87W while hers is a 61W.

Ok, I'm an idiot. I hadn't tried all possible combinations of USB-C cables and chargers. With my 87W charger and my daughter's Apple OEM USB-C cable, all is well. I guess my aftermarket USB-C cable is not up to snuff (though very odd that it worked fine until exactly when I replaced the battery), and with the Apple cable and my daughter's 61W brick, the problem was the lower capacity brick.

Some of my replies to this thread have been moved to separate answers for some reason. Anyway, one update: resetting the SMC removes the old battery info but new battery is still not recognized at all.
