Device won't turn on, won't restore and won't update [4013 error]

I was using my IPad 5 (Wi-fi) as usual and it suddenly froze and turned off, my battery was on 80% and all seemed normal, I have always used original charging cable and my only drawback is that I never really updated it, although I have tried recently but it didn’t work.

The IPad won’t turn on and when I try to turn it on the apple logo appears and shortly after it turns black again. I have been able to put it in recovery mode.

After the problem, I rushed to connect it to itunes. Itunes detects it and is able to grab the serial number and some device information, also suggests me to update it or restore. When trying to update it fails right after the part where itunes extracts the data, the same thing happens when trying to restore. It’s like the computer stops detecting the IPad, and stays on the “Waiting for IPad” part.

After trying multiple times, with different cables, all original, different PC ports, and even a different PC, nothing seems to work. Because of that, I naturally went to a repair shop and he initially said that some of the connectors could be oxidated on the charging port, but it didn’t work. He is now proceeding to diagnoses the connector it self and may swap it with a new one, but I am not confident on this guy.

Does someone have any idea of what it could be and how to fix it?

hello jlevidutra,

error 4013 is a connection error. Appears when the device does not respond to the request to transfer a "cycle status". In short - a problem with the lightning cable or the port on the tablet. Unfortunately, the huge problem of the tablets is their lightning socket durability. Due to the design, the tape connecting the port to the motherboard breaks due to mechanical overload. If you are experienced in soldering microelectronics, I recommend a DIY repair. It is not so bad. Unfortunately, problems appear already at the stage of sticking-out the screen (without breaking it), removing the motherboard (not breaking the delicate electronics connections) and soldering the elastic tape - which is also a challenge for many people (most often they break the copper connection pads, then put everything into one and they give back the iPad saying that it cannot be repaired - so in my experience in repairs after other repair shops). The iPad was not designed to be taken apart. It is mounted rather once. But it is not impossible :-)

If you are inexperienced or don't feel strong enough, there are only two solutions: take your tablet to a good repair shop or sell your iPad damaged on eBay. In the former case, the cost may be $ 250, in the latter, $ 100 or slightly more.

  • regards and Marry Christmass :-)
