Possible to check new battery just by connectiong to the battery port?

I had got a faulty replacement battery earlier which i had to send back and on the verge of receiving a new one. I was thinking of not taking out the full logic board and just trying the new battery by plugging it into the port first to check if my laptop boots up fine and the battery is detected by the OS. Then if it shows up fine, going ahead with the proper install. Is this doable?

My last replacement battery was not showing up the charge and the laptop shut off instantly as soon as the charger as taken off.

Can't see a reason why you can't do that. Disconnect old battery put the new one in, be careful though as you won't be able to put back cover on. You don't want battery flying around and taking the logic board chunk with it.

Just out of interest, did you check whether your model was in a battery recall programme? If it was you should have had it replaced by Apple for free
