Micro soldering Audio IC for iPhone 7

Hello, my question is regarding the iPhone 7’s Loop Disease. For any micro soldering geeks here on iFixit, here is my question for you: If I buy the soldering workstation on iFixit, does it have everything I would need to get the job done (besides needing a heat gun)? Thanks!

To do an Audio IC repair, you need both the soldering station and hot air station. The hot air station will allow you to remove, reball and solder the audio IC in place. The soldering station will allow you to make the micro-jumpers necessary to complete the repair. Of course, you can get the Quick Hot Air Station which is really good but much less expensive than the Hakko. However, for the soldering station, I highly recommend the Hakko.

Of course, you also need flux, solder, tweezers, various consumables for cleaning etc.

This is a considerable investment in cash but also time, don’t do your first micro-soldering repair on an otherwise good device…not to mention that the Audio IC is a deceptively difficult repair with plenty of gotcha’s that can turn your phone into a brick. If you do this, get some dead or iCloud locked phones and practice a lot first.

Wowee!!! I’m 13 and I was wondering if I could get all my equipment on Christmas of this year, I guess maybe not if it’s going to be 800$ haha! Anyway, @refectio, if I were to get the 50$ ifixit set and a cheap heat gun, would it be possible to do, like, a very barebones, but working repair?

Minho is absolutely right and as for the station on ifixit I don’t think it is suitable for microsoldering. If it is the one I am thinking of it has no heat control and the tip looks far too large to solder micro jumpers which are required for the audio IC. You don’t need something expensive a cheap solder/rework station will do the job. Just make sure you can buy accessory solder iron tips for it.

If you don’t want to spend much money something like this is all you need it is available from Digikey. Part number 2260-AO888A-ND
