I replaced my hard drive with a crucial mx500 I got from the ifixit site. After installing it, I only get a white screen and can’t get into recovery mode. Holding the option button during startup only allows the mouse curser to appear but nothing else populates the screen. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Sadly your model does not offer internet recovery so its reacting correctly!
Do you still have the original grey CD/DVD’s that came with the system? Do you have a FireWire external drive which is setup as a boot drive?
If not you’ll need to put back your HDD into your system as your series won’t boot under USB, but you can set it up via USB! You’ll need this adapter SATA to USB Adapter Cable so you can plug in your new SSD.
But we do have a problem! Your system requires a SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) drive!
The Crucial MX500 SSD is a fixed SATA III (6.0 Gb/s) it won’t work reliably in your system. You need either a fixed SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) drive like OWC Mercury Electra 3G SSD or one that auto senses the systems SATA I/O and matches it like a Samdsung 860 EVO SSD
Next we have an OS installer hiccup! Apple has expired the OS installers certificates so it won’t install on a system who’s clock date is set for todays year. Here’s more on that If you've got an old macOS install image, it will probably stop working today
You’ll need to get a fresh OS installer, your system can only go up to El Capitan How to upgrade to OS X El Capitan Jump down Step 4 and click on the Blue URL link: Download OS X El Capitan After downloading it double click on it to unpack it and double clicking on it again will launch it, but before you do that you’ll want to format your SSD with Disk Utility setting it up with a GUID partition and a journaled file system (HFS+)

I could install Mavericks fine though on an iMac like this last year... Maybe its clock reset itself?
@ngs765 - You could back date the clocks date to a year the OS's certificate was valid.
But! Reseting the clock in its self to any obituary time or date won't have any effect if its outside of the certificates window.
@danj The clock mentioned it was "Jan 1, 2000" and yet the install continued just fine? Is it because I used a boot USB?
@ngs765 - Each OS has a certificate window between two dates. That was the point of the article I pointed you to "If you've got an old macOS install image, it will probably stop working today"
So the given OS-A will have a different set to OS-B
So having your system set for Jan 1, 2000 for the given OS might work but then again it could be outside of the window for a different OS.
I would still strongly recommend you upgrade (or just install) El Capitan as I outlined. The refreshed installer has a new certificate which will work for todays date so you don't need to mess-around with the clocks setting (having it set for Apple Time Service or manually set for the correct date and time.
Besides, its a better OS and has updated security updates!
@danj I just installed Mavericks because I like the look. No way I'm doing any work on that iMac

Have you even installed an OS on that drive yet? If not, create an install USB then hold option with the USB in.
And isn't option on startup for startup disk selection and not recovery?

With either command r or option during start up nothing populates the screen. I have a bootable usb drive in but since the screen is blank I can’t install the os.
