Model number comes up as Retina on IFIXIT site -- Its not.

I want to upgrade my SSD. After following the extensive online guide to figuring out my MACBOOK PRO’s model number and serial number the IFIXIT site keeps referring me to the retina function model (MacBook Pro 13" Retina (Function Keys, Late 2016-2017) SSD). Mine does not have retina function. It is, however, a refurbished model. Could that be messing things up?

The term 'Retina' can confuse people! Thats just the a description of the display technology nothing more! From 2012 onwards Apple offered Retina models.

Within macOS you can go to 'About this Mac' section under the Apple menu. Below the OS version info you'll find a description of your system as well as the serial number. What does it tell you your system is?

Ah. That is super helpful. Thanks so much!

Apparently, my question is misleading some to think I'm still looking for the model number, etc. I'm not. It is this:

Hardware Overview:

Model Name: MacBook Pro

Model Identifier: MacBookPro14,1

Processor Name: Dual-Core Intel Core i5

Processor Speed: 2.3 GHz

Number of Processors: 1

Total Number of Cores: 2

L2 Cache (per Core): 256 KB

L3 Cache: 4 MB

Hyper-Threading Technology: Enabled

Memory: 8 GB

Boot ROM Version: 428.0.0.0.0

SMC Version (system): 2.43f10

The 'retina' biz was throwing me off!!

@themckenna - Here's a useful reference going over the different Mac custom SSD's The Ultimate Guide to Apple’s Proprietary SSDs Jumpdown to Generation 5 for the available Apple SSD's.

There is also a M.2 adapter frame you can get Is this SSD adapter legit? but the M.2 SSD's tend to drain the battery quicker! So it maybe not worth it. SINTECH SSD Adapter for NVMe M2 SSD's for 2016 & 2017 13" MacBook Pro (A1708).

There are multiple ways to find your serial number. You can find it in the “About This Mac” option under the Apple menu. You can also typically find it printed on the bottom plate of the machine. If the machine is refurbished, the bottom plate might not match the specs of the internal components. Once you have located the serial number, use the website https://checkcoverage.apple.com to get the model name of your machine.
