Black screen after Fusion Drive deletion to upgrade to SSD

I was in the process of upgrading a 27" iMac (2014). I wanted to swap out the Fusion drive for an SSD. I googled the procedure of splitting up the Fusion Drive winding up with two distinct drives which were visible within Disk Utility. The original SSD stick and the HDD.

I then I had the option of reinstalling macOS from scratch but I did not. Perhaps that was a bad decision. I decided to install the new SSD which contained the system backup. I booted the iMac back up and got the chime but nothing on the display (black display).

  • I double and triple-checked the cabling and all seems fine.
  • I tried booting into recovery mode but still nothing on the display.
  • The first three of the four lights on the motherboard light up. the top one doesn't.
  • I tried a PRAM reset and removing and reinstalling the extra RAM sticks but still no success.

Would anyone have any solution or explanation for this situation?

This iMac is much needed for online school and now I’m stuck.

Update (09/20/2020)

The original plan was to Install Windows 10 through Bootcamp but the installation kept failing because of the Fusion drive. Bootcamp cannot install if there is more than one image within the Mac.

I deleted the Fusion drive and replace it with a new SSD. I removed the glued on screen and swapped the HDD with an SSD. I turned it back on and got a chime but a black screen.

Fast forward now, I did a complete tear-down and removed the PCIe blade in case it was the culprit and reassembled leaving only the new SATA SSD with the system backup.

Then I sacrificed removing the screen from my i9 to check if it would work on the i7. It booted and worked but even though the screen resolution doesn't look the same the system worked.

I reinstalled the i7 screen on the i7 body and got a really faint apple logo and then a faint desktop but could not see the mouse.

I needed to use the power button to shutdown. I tried it again but the screen is black again. How do I get my i7 screen working again?

Update #1

I just realized that the reason I could see faint icons is because I still had my head light on and it was pointing toward the screen and then I saw items appear where my light was shining.

I was using a head light to see the cabling inside the iMac prior to removing the screen completely. What does this all this mean?

Two cables are involved, rights? Image and data. Which is which? The fourth green light on the logicboard is still off and my desktop is "hiding" behind a black screen.

Update #2

I did some more Googling and troubleshooting and swapped the display power cable from the i9 screen and the i7 screen came back to life on the i7 iMac.

Perhaps it ripped out when I first unglued the screen. It looks like I will need to purchase a new display power cable for the i7 iMac.

This sucks! It will take a very long time for delivery due to the COVID-19 situation.

I shall report back when the situation is resolved to report on this issue.

Lets back up here a sec, what SSD are you installing a SATA drive replacing your current HDD or did you pull the logic board to replace the PCIe blade SSD?
