Will I be able to set up Win10 bootcamp with a 3rd party ssd/adapter?

I recently started using my macbook air 2012 11” as my main pc.

Catalina 10.15.6, 64gb apfs oem ssd.

I don’t have enough money to buy something better, it’s running fine but I decided to upgrade the ssd with this adapter:

and this 1tb internal ssd:

m2 2280

Comments on amazon seem to indicate that this combo works fine for MacOS, and it’s a lot cheaper than OWC/transcend, I know it might not be as compatible but I can’t afford those and it’s not worth it to me to put much money into a laptop this old that big sur will drop soon.

Anyway, I would like to use some of the space for Windows, I thought it would be easy but after ordering I found out there might be problems,

I’ve been told the 4gb ram will make VM not a pleasant experience so that’s out, I would like to run boot camp, but I’ve read and recieved conflicting opinions about whether boot camp will play nice with third party ssds.

One person said it should be ok, another person with much more experience in the matter told me that there will be issues, “macOS works on third-party SSDs, but the Apple SSD drivers used to install Windows will not.”

I just wanted a second opinion of is it worth trying bootcamp with this specific setup and if there are any work arounds I could try if not? Googling people’s problem threads is not very useful because every macbook/MacOs/ssd is different and posts from a few years ago may not be applicable to my computer. thanks.

Because Apple officially supports this computer with Windows 10 (including the drivers), and the SSD is a regular PC SSD, I think it should work perfectly with your computer!

That's great to hear, I was going to try it and see what happened, despite getting mixed messages about bootcamp and pc ssds online, but it's nice to get an encouraging answer, I'll let you know if it worked.

I have a 2012 macbook pro and am running 12.2.1 Monterey. I also have a similar SSD and adapter. bootcamp assistant seems to format and install windows without issue. however, upon rebooting into windows, the screen is just black. windows 10 will not boot at all on this 3rd party SSD. is there something i can do or drivers i need to update or install to be able to boot windows from it?

Sadly, you need a real Apple SSD or OWC SSD as its the most compatible. M.2 SSD's don't offer all of the needed lines the real Apple/OWC SSD's do.
