Refrigerator wasn't cooling, now it is..

GE Adora bottom freezer. Frig all of a sudden was warm, and freezer was over 30 degrees. Technician came, could hear it running, look at evaporator coils through bottom freezer panel.. They were warm, and it was a bit wet. He said it was shot - and too expensive to repair - could be 700-1000 bucks. That’s all he did. Fast forward 10 days with it still plugged in and temps were all over the place up and down (freezer usually under 30 degreees, frig varied at first into 60’s then into 40’s). Past 2 days freezer is 0-5 degrees (now at zero), and frig this morning 36. Does this make sense? I have a new frig on order, and wondering…. I realize things don’t fix themselves, but I am concerend I am getting a new frig for nothing.
