HP 17-y001AX Notebook - Ram upgrade?

My mum’s 17” AMD APU notebook is starting to get laggy with it’s mechanical HDD and 8GB ram. Is this laptop upgradable? I have 16GB of ram on hand and a spare SSD that I can put in, but I don’t want to open it up until I have some sort of guide or knowing if it’s even upgradable. Thanks.

Yes it is everything you need to know is in this manual (page 18):

Depending on what processor you have it will either be using DDR4 or DDR3 SODIMMs.

SSD can be put in as it uses a 2.5” HDD by standard.

It's got an A8 APU with R5 graphics. Is that DDR3 or DDR4?

door

That uses DDR3 Low voltage ram according to the manual:

- PC3L, 12800, 1600-MHz

So to get compatible sticks it would need to be DDR3L (L for low voltage usually 1.35V sticks) at 1600 MHz. It is rated to run at 8GB max for capacity. Not confirmed if it can run higher to 16GB.

I had another, older laptop by HP rated at 8GB max but it ran fine with 16GB. Is it worth trying?

You can try if you want just make sure to not close it up fully when testing in case it doesnt work.
