Tmp display changes to default temp of 22 degree

I have GE Monogram ZISS420NRJSS (mfg date 07/07). I notices that the ice in the freezer slowly started melting. The display temperature settings showed 22 degrees Celsius. I adjusted the temperature back down to a cooler setting on both sides ( fridge and freezer section) but after 7 seconds the display changed back to 22 Degree Celsius.

I changed the main control board AP3885943 and the inverter board AP5669522. Plugged the fridge back in and waited a few minutes for it to get going. Then adjusted the temperature back down. Again after a few seconds the temperature display goes back to 22 Degrees C.

Compressor is working and fans are running. When I open and close the door it jumps into suction mode to seal the fridge.

What can this be ?

Does it have a freon leak?

Hi @edwardali

Does it show 22 C for both compartments?

Try using a thermometer to see what the temperatures in the freezer and the refrigerator compartments actually are when the display shows 22 deg. C, in case it is just a temperature display problem.

Is the evaporator icy cold to the touch? (be careful that you don’t literally stick to it if it is). Are the condenser coils warm/hot to the touch? Are there any oily residues below the compressor or on the condenser coils at all which may indicate that there is a refrigerant leak?

If not then the high/low pressures in the sealed system would need to be tested to determine what and where the problem is. It could be a faulty compressor, a lack of refrigerant or if there was a build up of ice on a pipe leading from the compressor or into the evaporator unit etc then perhaps a blockage in the sealed system.

If the freezer was always at 22 deg.C there should be no ice at all as it should not have formed in the first place or it should have at least nearly all melted before if the temps were at 22 deg.C. for only a while.

Even if the refrigerator was in the defrost cycle i.e. compressor and evaporator fan are both stopped and defrost heater turned on, the freezer temp should never go above 0 deg.C because at this temp or very close to it, the defrost thermostats - parts #894 + 895 - freezer section should signal the control board to end the defrost cycle. The control board then turns off the defrost heater and starts the compressor and evaporator fan again to drive the temp back down to the normal operating temp settings of between -21 to -14 deg.C

It shows 22C for both compartments. I don't have temperature gauge but will get one today and check. The temp in both sides are the same - warm.

When I turn the fridge on (power on as it is unplugged now) I can feel cold air drifting down from under then ice making section. Not blowing just some coldness. The condenser coils were very dusty so I clean it best I could from the front of the fridge. They seem warm when the unit is running. No oil residue below the compressor or condenser coils.

The fridge has been turned off for a number of days now long enough for any ice to melt.

Hi @edwardali

OK the evaporator fan inside the freezer compartment (there's also a fan inside the refrigerator compartment as well) will turn off when a door is open. This is to prevent any cold air being blown out the door deliberately and therefore lose more cold air then necessary. So that is maybe why you don't feel the cold air blowing out of the vents but only drifting out, perhaps just due to natural airflow with a door open.

Try manually operating the door switch located in the door jamb and check the fan then. The lights should go out as well as the fan turning back on.

These switches (one for each door) are used by the control board for both purposes. Turn on/off lights and fan off/on when a door is open and shut.

Do not confuse these internal fans with the condenser fan which is located outside, under the compartments near the compressor and can run whether the doors are open or not. It is there to cool the condenser coils if they get too hot to make the refrigerator work more efficiently.

You said before that there was still ice in the freezer so am confused now, is there or isn't there after so many days without power?

Once a fridge is restarted after being off for a few days and the temperature is nearly the same inside the fridge as outside it can take anywhere up to 24 hours (also depending on how often and for how long the the doors are opened) for it to get back to the correct operating temperatures as the internal walls etc have also got to get to the same temperature as the cold air that is being pumped into the compartments as effectively they are giving off heat until they do which affects the overall temperature inside the compartments.

Manually operating the door switch the fan did turn on. I could feel the cold air flowing out.

The fridge was unplugged for a few days and all ice has melted.

I've plugged the fridge back in and turned it on. It has been on now for 6 hours and the fridge temp inside the fridge section is 7 degrees C (temperature gauge) and freezer section is -11 degrees C. I'll wait for 24 hours to see what the temperature gets to on both sides. Stay tuned.

Keep a check that once every 8-12 hours (depends on maker) the fridge will go into the auto defrost cycle. During this time the compressor and the evaporators fans are turned off and the temp in the freezer is allowed to rise to 0 C to melt any ice build up. The defrost heater under the evaporator unit is also turned on to speed up the process as you don't want the food to even begin to thaw. The ice melt water drains via a tube under the evap unit to the evap pan under the compartments near the compressor.

When the temp reaches 0 C the defrost thermostat signals the control board to stop the cycle by turning off the heater and starting the compressor and fans again to drive the temps back down again. The whole process takes about 15-25 minutes and is repeated every 8-12 hours.

If the ice doesn't melt then it may be a faulty heater or a blocked drain. If the compressor /fan aren't restarted after the cycle should have finished it may be a faulty defrost thermostat. Worst case is a faulty control board

Just things to watch out for

Well It's been 24 hours and the fridge temp is steady at -17 Degree C in the freezer and 3 degrees C in the fridge. So seems to be working again. I had changes the inverter and the main board.
