2009 iMac CPU fan runs on high off and on with minimal load.

My 2009 iMac 27ā€ CPU fan runs on high at times and then normal with minimal load. Mac Fan Control shows zero rpm when fan on high and then 940 rpm when not on high. Iā€™d like to find a replacement ambient temperature sensor but can only find one for 2011. Can I use this version or is there another option?

Let's get a better view of the sensors as this sounds more like a failing tach in the motor. Disable your fan control app.

Install this great app! TG Pro after installing adjust the window size so all of the sensors are visible with the fan within the window. Then take a snapshot of the window when the system is at the high heat point and again when the system is at idle. We need to see all of the sensors and fans. Did you change the hard drive at any time?

@danj I'm with @mayer on this one> First we need to know if there has been a hardware change before using software for the solution.

@mrgeek - TG Pro is a diagnostic app! It's not fixing anything here. I need to see the sensors and their thermal values as well as the fans RPM's

@danj Ahhhh, nice! I thought it was similar to Macsfan or one of those. I'll have to check that out!

Gekozen oplossing

I ended up installing a new CPU fan and ambient sensor since I had it apart and that fixed the issue. Thanks for all your help.
