This is very likely the same problem I had which are bad LED strips. I’m not sure what went wrong with them but to service any of them, you’re near guaranteed to bend the strips so replacement is the only way. No soldering LEDs unless you want to drive yourself crazy.
I had one or two strips kind of light up when I disassembled. Didn’t realize it was actually dim too until I swapped.
I finally lost all my LEDs following my last update. I thought "what the heck, I'll try bridging the connections" as mentioned below by @ronchinnery. IT WORKS
One strip didn't come back but just by bridging the middle connectors, I brought back 5/6 of the LED strips I had replaced so it's worth a shot if you don't mind getting back in there. Soldering takes some skill because the board does a great job of dissipating heat and the solder cools super fast.
Weird but, somehow my image quality improved this time around: my red pixels had a significant lag and would be terribly noticeable on something like the Netflix logo. For some reason it's gone so it actually looks better than I've ever seen.
The free TV continues to give!
I see a strip has gone out on my TV already. If you see this, you're on your way to bridging the strips following advice below.
Just replaced them all and the end result was exciting.

If I recall, there are different pieces blocking the buffer board/scan drive covers. Just make sure everything is out of the way: speakers, tv stand brackets, etc. I folded and taped the buffer boards to the front of the screen like in the Vizio video. They are fragile. I removed the reflector sheet rather than cut. It's just double sided tape but I would just cut if I did this again. There are so many tiny parts and having an intact reflector/potentially ruining it is not worth it. Wires delivering power are underneath the sheet so watch for those if you cut (look at my earlier pic). Replacement strips come with new double sided tape preinstalled and connect together rather than having a wire in between. Old strips will bend and be useless afterwards. They are really stuck.
Tips:
- I used suction cups from Home Depot to lift the screen. They are super strong so I only squeezed them hard enough to lift the screen but enough that you won’t drop it. It’s scary. I lifted the screen more times than I needed because I kept goofing up and rushing. Ideally you lift it out, set aside, do your repair, and place it back in… once.
- The screen is glass. Have lots of room to move things around and clean places to set things down. Like 4 times the size of the screen because you’ll need somewhere to work, somewhere to set the filters down, the lcd, and the reflector sheet if you took it out. I chipped the corner of the lcd using the metal frame to guide it in place and learned quickly to be gentle. That was the hardest part since the adhesive is still sticky and held when I laid it in incorrectly SO many times.
- When going around the edge of the screen, it is adhered with black foam tape. (1:40 in the TCL video) I used a thin plastic card. Mine balled up while cutting and I didn't clean up when assembling so I can see little black lumps on one edge part of the screen.
- GET HELP TO GUIDE IT IN AND OUT. The adhesive will stick in places when you go to lift it the first time so have someone around to use your plastic card to find those stuck spots. It will also want to stick when you place it. Try to place it correctly the first time.
Best of luck! My TV was free so this was worth it. Assess your risk but I’m glad some people are keeping these cheap monsters out of the junk pile!

I have this happening more frequently now. Reached out to Element and at first they were going to repair or replace. Then throughout our conversation found out it was bought on Black Friday. So they paid me what I paid. ALL 65" Roku TVs have 2 year warranties. Mfg Date on back. I think they knew about these crappy boards and sold them anyway... Class Action!! Tried the Home x 5, up x 1, rewind x 2 and ff x 2, master resets, Now i am going to try a new set of backlights...

I have the same issue with the TV. Just happened last weekend.
I called and talked to the customer support. Apparently, I'm a couple months out of 1 year warranty.
2.5 months, to be specific. They wouldn't help me at all. Now, I'm stuck with a TV, which should last more several years (!), that is dark on the top and bottom.
Element, you lost a loyal customer. Crappy customer service, cheaply made TV's... I should have expected this from a Black Friday special, I suppose.

This happened to me. My screen started fading to black. I called Element Customer Support and the first rep was not really helpful. It keep nagging at me so I called back. The next rep said they are aware of the issue and he kept apologizing. He confirmed there is a 2 year warranty on the 65" Roku TV. I totally agree that they knew these TV's were no good which is probably why they were so cheap on Black Friday. This was my first time buying a flat screen and the TV is not even 2 yrs old. I should have kept my old TV's with the back. I was not having any issues with them. #PeerPressure

Backlight replacement works like a charm! It’s like a brand new TV again! Highly suggest otherwise I’m buying all 65” black screen Element Roku TVs m!!!

We're having this same issue with our t.v. it just started with the dark strip at the top of the t.v. and now it flickers orange and different colors as we watch it, this was also a black Friday special almost 2 years ago, I haven't reached out to element or customer service but I plan too, do t think I will be purchasing anything element in the future , we almost bought two when we got this one and I'm glad we didnt.
