Why does my MacBook Pro turn off several times a day?

my MacBook Pro goes black several times a day. I'm not able to do anything with it then but dead boot it. I do run programs on it that run 24/7 and have to reopen every single one every time i have to reboot. The screen goes black at different times, and lately even sometimes when i'm not switching between windows or open a new window up. PLease help i love my mac but this is getting really frustrating

ok. Worked at comp most off the day. Reset SMC and PRAM as per examples. After resetting SMC a bit more trouble getting the computer to run did not want to kick back into starting apple icon. Seems fixed now. Then promptly another screen crash. Screen black. Used flashlight, but nothing was visible. The only thing not done is hook the computer up to external monitor. A copy of the trouble report sent to Apple as follows:

I will have to sent it in parts the comment is too long otherwise

With the history of this machine and information you have given: I would start out by running the diagnostic utilities on your OSx install disk to see what if any trouble codes it gives. Next try hooking it up to an external monitor to see if the screen on it is going black also. I would also take a look at your system logs to see what the operating system is saying about what is going on. Instructions for getting to the log files kept by the system is here. Next I would reset your SMC and PRAM. Instructions for doing that are here and here. What is the sleep indicator doing when the screen goes black? When the screen goes black can you take a flashlight and see anything on the screen, such as the open windows? Does changing the screes brightness up and down at least temporarily let you see what is on the screen again?

1) Take backups with time machine and reinstall OS X. After you installed, setup assistant appears. On Do you alreaddy have a mac screen, choose restore from time machine backup.

2)If reinstalling does not help, have you ever spilled liquids on it? If so, open up your macbook and check the motherboard for any visible corrosion. If you found any corrosion, check this guide: iFixit Liquid Damage Guide

3) Is the hdd showing any signs of failing? Boot from OS X install cd (Hold c key when booting) and go to utilities>Disk utility. From disk utility choose first aid> Verify disk. If problems are found press repair disk.

My compurers go black when hdd is failing, maybe yours does the same.

I have called apple help line and they have had me do the boot from OS X install cd holding the c key. Did not change anything. I also never spilled anything on the computer. The computer is about 1.5 years old and is on about 24/7 related to gaming programs i run.

There is one more chance... Take the cover off and clean the dust inside. Dust can cause thermal shutdowns.

Hi! Those MBP suffer from a defective GPU. Depending on ur OS it either goes black or restarts & gives u a kernel panic information. See link: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088?viewl...
