If your able to change the date & time within the System Pref and it appeared to be altered to the new date & time in the finder. But, when you shutdown, removed the battery and restarted the system and the date & time reverted back. Your backup battery is dead on the main logic bd.

Newer systems use a capacitor to hold the settings when you pull your battery and use the main battery the rest of the time in the case of laptops.

Using update date & time over the Internet is also workable until you disconnect.

I don't understand "the computer stack". Plug it in and restart holding down the "Shift key". Plug into a hard wired ethernet internet connection and see if it resets automatically. If this fails, start up from you system installation disk and run Disk Utilities.

I have this same problem, so I got around it by checking the option in the date and time settings to automatically update both through the Internet. I attach my ethernet cable and voila!

You need to buy a PRAM battery and replace your old one (located inside on top of the DVD drive) if your date/time settings keep getting messed up after you power off.
