Can I upgrade ram and cpu by swapping out logic board?

Hi I have a 2014 mac min with 4gb ram and a 1.4 ghz cpu. I have an opportunity to get the same years logic board with 8gb ram and a faster cpu. Can I just swap it out and put in the new one. Will I have to get a fresh install of mac os? Thanks for any answers.

Update (03/24/2020)

The logic board I'm looking at is also a late 2014 model.

The OS is on your drive, so you won’t need to re-install the OS.

Do make sure you get a 2014 logic board as its the only one that will work in your system. Getting more RAM and a faster CPU is all good! But, As you need to take the system apart you may want to look at adding a second drive if you have a PCIe blade drive Mac mini eind 2014 Vervanging van de harde schijf & Mac mini A1347 (Mid 2011-Late 2014) Upper SATA Cable

Thanks for your response. Yeah the 4gb was not working out. I just put in a 250 gb ssd, but I am thinking about getting that second drive next. I'm just going to use the original hhd externally through usb for now. Do you know what the max transfer rates for the minis m2 drives are? I read somewhere they maxed out around 900 mb/s but I don't know why that would be.

Here's a good reference on the custom blade SSD's The Ultimate Guide to Apple’s Proprietary SSDs It's not an M.2! IT will explain the differences between the different SSD's. The best you can install is AHCI/PCIe 2.0 x2 SSD as the system doesn't offer four lanes or NVMe services.

Here's the needed part to add it SSD Flex cable, Apple P/N 076-00018 or this kit SSD cable with SSD and here's the guide Mac mini Late 2014 PCIe SSD Cable Replacement

Do keep in mind the blade drive is still much faster than the SATA III (3.0 Gb/s) interface. I would go with a 512 GB prep it up as your boot drive and transfer your apps to it. Leave the rest of the drive empty! This allows the OS to lever it for Virtual RAM and caching, Use your other drive as your data drive with all of your content.

Thanks! I'll look into that.

I have late 2014 Mac Mini, 1.4 GHZ-Intel Core i5, Memory-4GB-1600 MHZ-DDR 3, Intel HD 5000-1536 MB, Storage 500GB HD. I replaced the storage with 1TB SSD early 2019. Now is struggling with loading browser, email, etc: Might it be 'cos older parts are needing replacing too? Tony R.

How full is the drive? Have you run Disk Utility to check it for corruption?

I would clean the dust out and add in a PCIe SSD and make it the boot drive.

Have still got 600GB available on SSD!

Check the SATA cable logic board connection. The ribbon cable could also be damaged. Yo might want to replace it Mac mini A1347 (Mid 2011-Late 2014) Upper SATA Cable
