Read the old SSD out of unit and use as external drive?

Hi Guys,

I'm looking for a way to take out the SSD out of the unit and be able to read it externally on a Mac.

Reason

I am an engineer and have clients with dead units and I am guessing the the data on the SSD would be fine (no way of knowing at this stage) and would like to be able to take out the SSD and see if I can get to the data for my clients, is there a reader of some sort for this?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Commentaar:

I am looking for a while an external solution for this special SSD , so that I can use it as a startup drive on a desktop computer.

the only available one today is the one from OWC: Air SSD enclosure

thats a great enclosure cause as you can see on the pictures, it includes a special adapter for SATA. So I though that I can use that adapter to use the SSD in inside of any computer.

I contacted them, they don't feel the adapter alone. Thats too bad cause the whole enclosure shipped to europe cost 100 dollars in total + customs. So it becomes an absurd price for a just simple enclosure, but it is the only one in the market.

Ah if you buy a new SSD from them they do a discount but still too much shipping costs. So we europeans got no choice yet :(

While an SSD-to-USB case does not yet appear to be available, you can create an USB boot drive (or a thumb boot drive) and install the SSD from a damaged MBA in your known good MBA. You should be able to recover any readable files from the SSD. But, you're an engineer and have already thought of this.

OWC sells a USB enclosure for $35 US, but according to their website it is only available when you purchase an upgrade SSD from them. More information can be found here.
