MacBook Air suddenly won’t turn on but is still charging

Hey everyone,

Up until today my MacBook Air has been working perfectly fine.

Today I turned it on and it suddenly switched off. It is charging fine. The first time it turned on it was 53% and during one of the other reboots it was at 89%. Every time i get it to turn on it will automatically switch off.

Now I am having trouble getting it too turn on at all.

I have tried everything I can find.

Has this happened to anyone?

  • also worth noting it has no water damage, has not even come into contact with steam
  • I went on a flight yesterday, don’t know if this could’ve affected anything?

Try resetting the SMC controller. Turn it off, leave the MagSafe adapter plugged in. Hold down Option + Control + Shift + Power for 10 seconds. Observe the green/amber light in the MagSafe connector: typically it will change state to indicate a successful SMC reset. Then try powering on normally.

What I can tell you is your flight didn’t hurt your system as you had it with you in the passenger cabin as carry-on. If you had checked it its possible the baggage hold temp dropped below freezing! Then it gets into the amount of time it takes for the cold to seep into your luggage. As the cold could damage things.

So what do we need to focus in on? I’m suspecting your battery is just at the end of its life. What you’ll want to do if you can is setup on a second system a bootable external drive which is setup with CoconutBattery and I would even setup the user account to automatically run it so it takes less time to load up. As soon as it does get a snapshot of the main window before your system shuts down. As your external drive was the startup the screenshot will be on it so you can salvage it from the other Mac system.

To help prove the issue would be to disconnect the battery following MacBook Air 11" begin 2015 Vervanging van de batterij to at least Step 3. Now press the power button with nothing else connected for a good minute. Then plug in your MagSafe charger your system should spontaneously startup and as long as you don’t disconnect the cord your system should stay running. Are you able to get that far?

Hi Dan,

thanks for your response. I don’t believe it’s an issue with the battery as I have been able to turn it on, without the charger connected, and it stays on for about 10-15 minutes each time, before completely shutting off again. When it was last on I ran a battery health check and it said the batter was “normal” and no issues were found with the computer when I ran the trouble shooter? It’s like there is a power supply issue?

The power supply is the battery which is charged by the MagSafe or directly run from the MagSafe charger.

Can you try posting the CoconutBattery snapshot so we can see what's happening. Then post it here for us to see Voeg afbeeldingen toe aan een bestaande vraag
