Screen shuts off after opening more then ~30 degrees

This began with dimmer nodes at the bottom of the screen as it was opened and concluded later with the screen first going dimmer and then blacking out as it is opened before this issue was fixed by resetting the pram and smc. However that is no longer the case, additionally, it has been taken to a repair place and they said that the cable seemed fine.

I have a MacBook Pro 15 mid 2017! He was having problems with the keyboard! Slightly elevated trackpad, back cover buckling with the battery puffed up, the screen only worked if it opened approximately 75 ° and the screen did not close completely!

My Mac was eligible for the keyboard recall program! They changed the top case and the battery! But they didn't change or repair the display / screen! They are claiming that the screen problem was caused by dirt debris that damaged the cable! What cable are you using on newer devices? Because I have another MacBook Pro 13 mid 2010, which works perfectly today, it is used in the same environment, same residence!

Is it the battery that did not cause this problem on the screen? Until the screen didn't close completely! Hidden cable manufacturing addiction? How can dirt cause such damage in 2 years and not in 10 years?

You have the dreaded FlexGate issue! Ouch!

Sadly Apple only offered a extended warranty for the 13” models 13-inch MacBook Pro Display Backlight Service Program

You’ll need to visit a real Apple Store and request a warranty exception. Be polite! And if they don’t give it to you, ask to speak to the service manager, and work your way up the food chain.

If you can’t get to an Apple Store your only option is replacing the display your self which is not that hard! Here’s the needed part: MacBook Pro 15" Retina (Late 2016-2017) Display Assembly and here’s the guide MacBook Pro 15" Touch Bar eind 2016 Vervanging van het scherm

@danj I got the same machine in, it's the same problem, of the screen shutting down after opening greater than 30 degrees but no stagelight issues. A visual inspection is showing nothing amiss. Runs fine till opened greater than 30%, then the display just goes black. Just in case, I reset the SMC and PRAM. Any pregnant ideas?

Three options available:

  • Purchase a new screen. Expensive but doable from a DIY point of view.
  • Good alternative: purchase an original used full screen assembly. Examine the cables or make sure to test it. It could be suffering from the same symptoms or just starting to fail at the cable level.
  • Have the screen refurbished by pulling the LCD out and replacing the whole cable assembly (main risk is breaking the LCD).
  • Have the cable repaired. After a couple of years of refining this method, I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s a great option provided you have a steady hand and the right tools and specially the right technique. I’d recommend someone in your area who could offer it with an extended money-back warranty (don’t buy into it if they offer no warranty).
  • It’s by no means a DIY project unless microsoldering is up your sleeve.
  • Final note: I used to be sceptical about the last two solutions, but after mastering the last one and seeing other techs master the one before the last, I now think they’re both very solid alternatives to buying expensive new or used screens.
