iPad Pro 10.5 (2017) won't switch on

I’ve had a diagnostic done on an iPad Pro 10.5 (2017) model which won’t power on - it did power on a couple of times then went off after 1-2 minutes but won’t come on at all now. The result of this diagnostic says the company is that it’s not repairable as the issue related to CPU. My question is does this sound like it’s the end of the road for this iPad? Is it worth a second opinion? Can a CPU be replaced?

I’m not sure who I turn to in the UK who could take another look? As is stands, I have a small metallic tray.

You may want to consider mail-in repair. There are lots of great techs all over the world. Just search "iphone micro-soldering your-location". Frequent contributor (and awesome tech) @arbaman is in Sardinia.

Was the device opened in order to give this diagnostic? If not, it’s hard to believe that a faulty CPU could be determined from just looking at the outside of the device. Can you give us more background information on how the device came to failure; was it dropped, repaired or came into contact with water?

Based on the info you give us, my first suspicion would be a dead battery or perhaps a charge port issue. No juice and the device will not boot or run. You will probably want to get a second opinion because I have never seen a “bad cpu” on a device unless it was physically trashed or heavily corroded.

I'm not 100% sure it was opened but the compayn said diagnostic suspects logic board issue so it would go to further investigation implying opening it up.

It is not physically trashed and prior to it refusing to come on at all, it did switch on a couple of times then within 2 minutes or so switch off. The last switch on claimed 85% charge as I'd left it on charge overnight. I tried the reset key combo and connecting to iTunes to no avail. Prior to all of this it was OK but in recent weeks becoming more challenging to charge up.

Do you have any recommendations for a UK-based repairer which could offer me more confidence in a more definitive outcome?

I've had the iPad looked at by a reputable local repairer - they said it looked to them like the device had been opened up. Anyway, they have opened it again and report too many "shorts" on the logic board and have deemed it unrepairable....

Picked up device. Faulty logic board confirmed. Now have a lightweight door stop.

"too many shorts" is usually accompanied by a water logged device. Was this local repairer a micro-soldering expert? I don't mean to disparage anyone (and no need to publicly name them either) but it just sounds like an apocalyptic diagnostic compared to the symptoms.

I have had many customers come in with devices that were pre-diagnosed and it bothers me when shops just say "unfixable" without explaining why (i.e., what are the shorts on your device, any evidence of water, poor repair or physical damage). There are good reasons why certain devices are not repairable but IMO, the customer deserves to be given a full explanation, that way they can make an informed decision on whether to pursue or not.

Of course I don't have the device in hand so it's easy for me to say...still, unless the shop specializes in micro-soldering repair, I would seek another opinion. That said, the Pro line are much harder to repair given the dearth of schematics and boardviews. It's up to you how far you want to pursue it.

I was not given a reason just that it was logic board issue and not repairable. They mentioned having microscopes and they did open it up. I’m ok with pursuing it further but it’s finding someone who can take a look and give me 100% confidence. UK-based recommendations welcome.
