can't work with ipod via itunes and explorer

Good day, my ipod's hdd does not respond. when i'm plug in it into usb, windows says that this disk had to be formated. Same happens when i'm trying to use ipod via itunes. I've tried to restore my ipod to factory state many times, but it does not help. I think i must try somehow to format it, but how? Help me plz!!!

p.s. the memory in ipod was full before i faced that problem. Restarts and other tricks, wich we can find googling did not help me. It works normaly. no songs inside. itunes says that 'ipod i does not work properly - try to restore to factory settings" nothing else. i can't check drive via explorer in windows 7

the restore of the iPod via iTunes is more or less a format, as the hard drive is empty after wards only the new firmware is loaded to the hard drive.

What does the iPod say after the restore ?

The only way to access the drive directly, is to open the iPod and use an adapter to connect the drive to the IDE port of a computer.

Your problems seems to be a damaged hard drive, if the hard drive constantly makes a sound: spin up, click.....spin up, click....a.s.o. The hard drive is damaged. If the hard drive makes problems in the iPod, but works fine, when hooked with an adapter to a computer, buy a new hard drive cable for the iPod.

Hi, every one! Thanks for the answer! I fixed my iPod. First i have to say again what was the problem. The hard drive in my iPod was almost full.

1. There was less than 1Gb free disk space! Never leave on iPod less than 1Gb free disk space.

2. I Disconnected cable without making action like may be everybody do! Go to system tray (neat the you windows clock) click eject usb device (i have russian windows, so i think you have something like that). Never disconnect your iPod directly from USB.

So what i had after all. I connected my iPod to PC. At windows XP all OS is not working - windows, mouse. I could make no action there until i disconnected my iPod from usb. After that my iPod was rebooted. That was always happening when i was trying to connect my iPod to PC via USB (On WIN XP). After that i've tried to connect my iPod to PC wich is using WIN 7. No problem, but windows could not recognize the hard drive, and ask me to format it. Formatting the iPod's hard drive via windows is failed.

What happened with itunes. When i start the itunes, it says, that your iPod seems to be damage, restore to factory defaults? I clicked restore. iPod rebooted. Again same message. But iPod is working normaly, when disconnecting it from PC. So what i did next.

I've downloaded leopard mac osx, burned to dvd-r disk. in bios setting put booting priority to CD/DVD. Restart PC and started like installing OS. Before clicking continue i went to UTILITIES=>DISK UTILITY. (BE ensure, that your iPod had to be connected always to usb, even before PC restarts, when changing settings in bios.) At disk utility you will see your hard drive and iPod. I've choose MSDOS (FAT) system, that clicked erase => YEAH! I formatted my iPod! And everything is working like a new. I checked iPod for bad clusters - Nothing found. iPod's hard drive is in good condition!

P.S. It always was making sound like spin up, click.....spin up, click....a.s.o. Thought that hard drive is totally damaged. Anyway - everything is OK! By the way if you have laptop or PC with leopard mac OS you can format it there.

GOOD LUCK in your repairs. never open your iPod, until you tried everything to fix it!
