What is wrong with my iPhone screen?

Today I noticed a smudge on my iPhone screen while it was turned off. I assumed it was from my fingers so I took a cloth and wiped it and much to my surprise it was still there? I’ve been searching online all day but can't find any answers and it’s driving me absolutely insane trying to figure out what it is. It’s definitely not a scratch it’s appearance is dull black in comparison to the normal glossy back it’s very smooth to the touch and i’ve found when i wipe the screen with more pressure it goes away but comes back after the screen has been touched. I guess it could be described as a patch? It’s an elongated oval and the outside you can see rainbow colors that are extremely subtle. It looks like it was under a really heavy weight but it wasn't. Fully functional.

SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME. IM OCD AND I CANT STAND SEEING IT EVERY TIME MY SCREEN IS OFF

It sounds like a factory defect in the lcd display. It should be covered by your warranty from Apple.

Thanks! I shattered the LCD screen on my macbook and sadly I am well aware of how LCD damage looks. Due to the fact it’s on the outside screen only and goes away after cleaning I’m guessing it’s the oleophobic coating. I can see how the outer circle having a rainbow effect sounds like the LCD but maybe it’s from the coating mixing with whatever product caused it to rub off? I know that happens on car paint. The spot is in the exact place where I place my thumb to scroll and mimics the exact motion. I’ve read other forums online and have found that other people have experienced the same problem. I only find it odd because I've had the phone less than a month. I’m assuming it’s from one of the hair products I use? I purchased some coating online and I’m going to try that first. I’ll keep the post updated!

If You used your iPhone under water, then its normal, and will not repaired under warranty. If your phone wasnt under water, then give it to apple, but ask only for screen replacement, not an whole phone.

This happens when the display delaminates. Usually happens when a lot of heat is put on a certain area of the display.
